If I were replacing that 39uf cap I would go to 100 volts if you can get oneComment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
Many SMPS ICs have Over Voltage Protection. If the VCC pin even briefly exceeds usually 25V, the IC will totally latch off and wont attempt a restart until totally powered down.Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
But surely it is only because the IC is out of circuit that the voltage gets to 37vdc, so with a new IC, the currently rated 25v one should be OK.
Or am I missing something?Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
Yes the STR-G6651 has that feature.
Data sheet has been uploaded.Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
No, I also tried cycling the power on/off to unlatch as mentioned in data sheet, but it had no effect.Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
In the interest of educating myself, and maybe others here, with the IC now removed, and if I put a 16vdc power supply across pins 3 & 4, Grd & VCC, on a functional IC what should happen?
I guess pins 1 and 2 source/drain switch should start oscillating on/off, or is the feedback circuit needed on start up?
In other words how do you test it, and is it possible without an oscilloscope.

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
I have done a similar thing with the part still in circuit by connecting a bench supply directly to the HVDC rail. NO MAINS CONNECTION MUST BE MADE, just the bench supply.
An alternate start resistor has to be temporarily added.
It is best to have an oscilloscope.Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
Are you talking about this IC or generally?
I have read some well written data sheets on similar IC's, and some of them start from the drain pin and then switch over to the Vin pin when running.
Looks to me like that is what happens with this one, because in the data sheet functional block diagram, it shows a zenner across source to drain, this is the start up is'nt it, if so it only passing from source to drain (o/c with probes reversed), in which case that is the element that has failed.

Let me rephrase my last answer then. I agree with that above.Comment

The STR-G6615 data sheet has no description of operation.

The D to S zener symbol indicates the intrinsic avalanche diode that most MOSFETs have.Comment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
Hi there Capleaker,
39uF is a very odd value, but that is what the schematic shows too... I thought that was a misprint. Put the original cap back in its place for now and change that IC. Because we need to know that the IC is working to hopefully fix the situation or troubleshoot it further.
Having too much voltage on the cap isn't good, but I am wondering "what" you actually measured. I expected the voltage to rise on the cap, when the IC is gone, but surely not a value of 76V.
Lets see if budm sees this.
Is it the Vin voltage too low at 13v, what could be causing this?Attached FilesComment

Re: JVC THS9 Home Cinema System SMPS No outputs or standby power
"and have a few weird fluctuating voltages on the board outputs," Before the IC was replaced you DID BOT get any Voltages on the secondary side at all, right. It sounds like the new IC is startup/shutdown mode.
BTW, your meter is not capable of measuring high frequency AC of the output of the transformer winding. your meter does not have enough bandwidth to measure High frequency AC Voltage, it is in 50~100KHz range.Never stop learning

by PedroGG90Hi everybody.
I have two 3 phase 400 vac smps siemens sitop 24 vdc giving red light overload and higher output 33 vdc.
The switching is controlled from micro controller.
Is it micro controller or transformer ? Or else pls ,?...Badcaps Electronics Repair Forum & Schematic Search -
This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.
Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today.... -
by fharris1977Hi. I got a Vizio with no power or standby, and won't turn on with remote or button. I checked the voltages on the connector and all read 0.00V or nearly 0(0.050 ON/OFF pin). None of the pins are labeled STB for standby although I do see some 5V pins. Other than the obvious standby led, which isn't coming on, is there a way to check for standby voltage on this PS. I'm trying to see if my problem is the PS or mainboard. Some Vizios I have fixed with no standby led me to think it was the PS but it turned out being the mainboard. Any experience with this set would be greatly appreciated.1 Photo

by dkneyleThis relic from a technology path that came to a dead end (but still has historical interest) was brought in with a dead SMPS, which is based around a MK1210 device. I got it going after a battle. It seems to have a strange design - if it's not getting feedback that the secondary is OK it cause the big FET to go into full conduction and overloads resulting in a blown fuse at best or something worse! I'm using a Dim Bulb Tester (70W/230V) which thankfully has saved the day a number of times whilst repairing.
Now, it loads a CD OK. The motor voltage output (which is built onto the SMPS... -
by shamsudeenHi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.
i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply.... - Loading...
