Was looking through some schematics and saw a 0Ω resistor. What is the point of having a resistor if it isn't even 1Ω?
What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?

What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.
My computer doubles as a space heater.

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
Can burn out if too much current/voltage is applied Ie S/C further downline so can act as a fuse. Vestel do this all the Tv with their Tv boards use 0ohms as fuses. But they can also act as links etc. Please Do Not PM My Page Asking For Help Badcaps Is The Place For Advise, Page Linked For Business Reasons Only. Anyone Doing So Will Be Banned Instantly !

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
they could have just called it a fusible resistor in the schematic? i believe they even have a circuit symbol for fusible resistors?Comment

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
they are often fitted because you can lift them to isolate parts of a circuit,
or because they need to bridge over some other tracks, and old pick&place machines couldnt auto-insert jumpwires.
but they could insert resistors.Comment

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
never though of that ... always made me wonder but never studied it ... i thought them as fuses .. then again i see lots of resistors as fuses .especially if limiting currentComment

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
if you crush a 0-ohm resistor you will find that atleast 50% of them are actually a continuous copper wire or even a metal sleeve and not a carbon or metal-oxide device at all.
i just murdered one for you.
pic1 - as it was desoldered.
pic2 removed the paint - looks like a plated metal body.
pic3 - crushed it in a crimp tool - it's solid copper with tin plating!!!Comment

Re: What's the point of a 0Ω resistor?
But there's also another reason:
They are often used as a jumper nowadays. Like on AMDs Radeon RX480 reference Board, there are a couple of 0 Ohm Resistors used to adjust the distribution of power. Ie if the Power comes from the PCIe slot or the Power cable.
With this knowledge you can also modify some graphics cards to run either totally off the cable or the slot.Comment

I am trying to repair an ancient Dell 2209WA Monitor which suddenly shut off with a pop sound. On investigation found that one of the fusible resistors had blown. Further investigation identified multiple components as faulty because of which the fusible resistor blew. Please refer the attached circuit diagram showing the components that were found to be damaged.
1. FR950 - blown fusible resistor - 0.2 Ohm 1W
2. Q950 - shorted Q950 MOSFET - 650V 10A N Channel Mosfet
3. R835 - Blown Resistor - 20KOhm SMD resistor
4. D930 - Shorted Schottkey Diode...-

I am curious if a 0402 resistor could go from 43 ohm to 0. In electronics class and my experience a resistor can degrade and gain resistance all the way up to not being able to conduct at all. I have never heard of a resistor decreasing in resistance and becoming 0 ohm or a dead short… that's not the direction they fail… or so I thought.
I was attempting to remove a wson8 chip on an iMac motherboard and it required a lot of heat, on one side of the chip were 3 0402 resistors that were very close. I popped the chip out unintentionally out of the tweezers and sent those resistors... -
by artvandalaiThe resistor on this waterpik blew. I changed it with the a similar spec 47ohm 2 watt yageo resistor but it still keeps blowing the resistor. Checking with the multimeter the motor, capacitor, diodes, and thermal fuse all checked normal. Will a higher ohm resistor work better? What ohm resistor will work better to repair this waterpik? This video is showing the repair with a 56 ohm resistor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J7_rV7ui1Y3 Photos

by gergelyI am looking at the schematic and i dont understand why is it important to have a 0,1 Ohm resistor. Does it have to do something with the 2 mosfet (Q3 and Q4) in series? What if i just replace it with a wire? thanks
