failed recap - antec true 380

    Hi,

    hoping someone can help me.
I had a faulty antec true 380 psu.
5 volt output was down to 4.5 volts.
I opened it up and found bulging caps 4700uf f*yous.
I sourced and fitted replacement caps, also replacing the 3300uf and 1000uf ones just to be sure.

I now cant get it to power on at all.
about 5 seconds after removing power it has a high pitched whistle.
I have had a close look at the board and all the solder joints look ok, and all the components likewise.

does anyone here have any ideas as to where to start looking to make this psu work again ?

Did you check caps polarity before the replacement? Electrolytics won't work if their polarity is reversed: they'll fail in a few minutes, sometimes they can explode too.

thanks for your reply, yes I made sure I got the polarity correct, I double checked just to make sure.

I have managed to resolve the issue, I used my multimeter probe and a toothbrush to scrape away all the flux around the solder joints.

I tried it again and it's all good
4.93 volts on the 5 volt line

So it was some dirt near solderings.
It seems you saved an otherwise valid Antec from power supplies' paradise: nice job.

How many of you have seen failed Panasonics!?
          by keldeo
In my experience, I've seen failed Taiwan/Chinese caps, obviously as I'm sure all of us had. I've also seen the defective Nichicon and Chemi Con series. Even seen failed Rubycons (MBZ I think?) if they are exposed to a lot of stress and heat. I've never seen failed Panasonics until now! Not just one, but 3! Also in seemingly random locations on the motherboard. Next to the RAM and CPU, but not t part of the VRM. It felt like I spotted a Unicorn, so I had to make this post. Motherboard is a IPIBL-LA. OEM from HP.

Unfortunately, I do not know the history behind this PC, it also had...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
          by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Help Needed: Reverse Polarity Issue on HP EliteBook 840 G4 – Where Do I Begin?
          by Dev Goose
Hi everyone, I recently acquired an HP EliteBook 840 G4 (6050A2854301-MB-A01) that I'm hoping to bring back to life. I'm fairly new to laptop repairs but eager to learn and willing to put in the effort to understand and fix this. Any advice or guidance would mean a lot!

          What Happened
The issue started when the laptop was accidentally plugged in with reverse polarity. Before this incident, the laptop would show a power/charging light whenever it was plugged in. However, now it's completely unresponsive—no lights, no power, nothing. I've been doing some research and understand

Antec TruePower 380p failed after intermittent supply, suspect MOV
          by rabbituk
          Hello,

I have an Antec TruePower 380p PSU that I had repurposed from a Sonata case. It had been working fine on a server in the loft using the Wake-on-LAN feature regularly until a couple of recent power outages where the power became very unstable - going on/off very quickly. There is now no output whatsoever from the PSU & fan isn't working. There was a pop when I attempted to turn it on.

Upon examination, it appears that voltage isn't getting very far so I believe the immediate issue is within the first stage. There is a green component that I am not familiar...
