I just find it confounding because I have the flat CRTs so they should be more failure prone. And again, 20,000 hours later (of usage; shelf life wise it's much older of course) and many thousand of cycles later, the first monitor of mine hasn't done it.... that seems to be stretching it even for "slowly" breaking down. When you say a capacitor inside the flyback, do you mean around one of the flyback circuits or do you mean that there's another capacitor inside the flyback itself that's breaking down? Is it electrolytic or something else? Going by that thread, it seems I'd need a whole new flyback.

EDIT: Why didn't I think of that. Yes, these monitors have flybacks from different companies. One is made in Japan (that's all it says) and the other has some part number I can't find any info on. No wonder one is starting to break down. Also, the UCC SMH in one of them has no plastic cover on the top...

out of curiosity, is the flyback made by Eldor ??

those have a VERY bad record in the arcade industry in monitors made by Hantarex.
how bad? lets just say a monitor more than 5 years old is VERY unlikely to have the original transformer!!

philips also had a reliability problem wih tv flybacks, but i dont know who was making those.

RCBS Chargemaster 1500 scale & powder dispenser
          by TortureGarden
          Good morning all.

I have an RCBS Chargemaster 1500 combo electronic scale/powder dispenser that I have been using without issue for 15 years or more. I powered her up to do some reloading the other week and the LCD panel backlight & characters lit-up and then immediately, the characters faded-out, leaving just the backlight illuminated. I thought it may have been a one-off so, I tested again (and again...), with the same result.

I separated the scale from the dispenser and disassembled the scale. Nothing obvious observed that could be causing the issue, caps look...

JVC Fire TV or any other Android based firmware
          by jczarniak
          Hi,

Is there available any Android Fire TV ROM backup ( Fire TV Firmware ) which I can download, save on USB stick and then load into the TV ?

I have got JVC LT-50CF810 Fire TV with firmware not working properly.

Thank you very much for any support.

          Regards.

Aluminum SMD caps vs thru hole caps (reliability)
          by 13mh13
The PCB motor for 1987 Technics SLP-120 CD player has slow spin-up issues. Similar to what another tech in the below video reported.

I replaced the three bi-polar 47uF electros but that made no difference. The orig three bi-polar 47uF electros tested okay on my ESR M-tester.
I have not tested/replaced those alum. SMD electro PCB caps.
Are Al smd caps are more prone to failure (or degradation) than regular thru-hole electros?
All the thru hole electros I removed / replaced on this CDP (and most...

GRT60-145410 brick PSU, how much of a fire hazard is this thing exactly?
          by spleenharvester
I bought an Alpicool C20 fridge, which is a 60W compressor fridge that runs on 12V or 24V, which can come from either an AC/DC adapter from mains (240V here in UK) or a car battery. The fridge itself is really good quality, so I was surprised to find the power supply (DC14.5V, 4.1A) pretty questionable. Despite being 240V/1.5A the plug was fitted with a 13A fuse - concerning, but not all that uncommon for imported chinese electronics here. But when I felt how light the brick was I immediately said hell no and transferred the proprietary connector to a MeanWell GS90A12-P1M brick (this supply is...

How to correctly desolder through hole IC?
          by LearningToRepair
          Hi!

I tried to desolder through I had IC that I wanted to replace but failed. And now I came here to learn what's the correct way for doing this. I tried to use soldering wick but the capillary force kept solder in the hole. With soldering wick I only managed to remove the part of solder that was outside the hole. But the solder that was inside the hole never got out. And of course when I moved on to next pin the solder in previous hole hardened again so no matter how many times I did all the pins there was still solder in holes.

Question 1: what would have been correct...
