Voltage difference puts me off using them for the K2749. D-G & D-S = K2698:500v vs. K2749:900v. Current wise, they're fine. Timings are within a few percentage points, so probably okay.

    Edit: BOTH were bad, correct?

I'm actually not sure, I wrote this in my first post:

When I charge it with my multimeter in diode test mode from source to gate I do get a reading when moving the positive over to the drain.
But it disappears after only 2 seconds, is that normal? (Tried Fluke 113 & CHY 17 multimeters)
Should I try putting it back in and see how that goes?

If you have multimeter, is that any kind of problem to determine whether the transistor is good or bad with that? I think it's better to use diode tester than set your balls on fire

Toasty: does that voltage matter? There should not be over 400 V anyway?

Yup. Use the lamp trick in series with the unit, in case it's shorted.

Behemot: Uhh I said I did test it with a DMM, infact two different DMM's

              And we have liftoff!
I put back in the K2749 and now the hard drive was able to spin up
12v was at 12.00v but 5v was very high, around 6.8v
I shut it down before checking more though since I'm not sure how long I'm able to run it like this without it blowing up
I'm gonna order a K2698 now and hope for the best...
Since I had virtually no load on 5v that might have been why it was so high... (5vsb was fine still)

Hopefully the new FET will have everything back in working order for you. To load the 5V couldn't you just stick a 100 ohm resistor in a molex connector? (Even on the back side of the one connected to the hard drive if you have no other options.) Just a thought. Good luck.

I think there already are some, several SMD and some big as well. But being it so high is not about minimum load I think, it would be rather low than high.

LDS: Sure I could, I could also have connected a 2.5" laptop HDD aswell...
But as it is I did not want to tempt fate by loading the PSU too much or running it for too long...

As it is I still have one very inappropriate transistor installed which drive the booster voltage, and for all I know it's doing a really poor job at that creating all sorts of problems and thus maybe causing the 5v to be high, I don't know...
But I see no need in chasing ghosts before I have replaced the transistor and seen how the PSU works then

Got the new MOSFET this Friday, PSU is working fine now
Thank you very much for the help everyone!

                        Voltages are rock solid at 3.36v 5.16v & 12.02v
Now I only need to replace some caps on the mobo too, Asus M2N61-AR
This PSU & mobo is from a HP Pavilion Slimline s3421.sc

Alright, that is great news!! I am glad you got it working.
