    Antec SB350 ...whining...

Well it was inevitable. My Antec SB350 (SmartBlue - I think it's just the same Smart Power with blue LED fans... hey it was on sale...) is starting the whine that my SP400 did before it died. I think a recap is coming soon. Darn those Fuhjyyu's...

Leaving it unplugged unless I need the machine until I get new caps for it... and hopefully save it before the 5VSB circuit kills the KA7500 again...

    Re: Antec SB350 ...whining...

I fixed one for my friend. It was the 22uF 50V that was causing the whining. And yes, the Antec killed his nice socket 775 Intel board because 5V SB measured 11V DC.

11V on the stand by? Ouch! I recap them even if the caps look good. Although those Fuhjyyu'd Antec's can be a pain in the ass to recap...the caps are buried in the wires and in hard to get places

Wow... I guess I got lucky that the SP400 didn't kill the motherboard, but it did kill its own main controller chip.

I was using the SP400 on an old socket 775 board as well, with AGP and DDR1 sockets... Not the nicest of boards but I'm surprised it survived the wrath of failed fuhjyyus...

Oddly enough the SB350 was the replacement for the SP400 on that particular Socket 775 board (with a P4 3.4GHz) when it died the first time around... I would have normally called this a bad omen but Fuhjyyu is really the bad omen...

          Re: Antec SB350 ...whining...

I've recapped several antecs which continued to whine, even after replacing the 22uF 50V cap on the 5sb. The only way to fix it seems to be to replace every single tiny cap in there.

One cap which I've sometimes had trouble finding a replacement for is a 0.1uF 50V (Panny FC don't go that low in capacitance). I usually replace it with a 0.1uF ceramic cap.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

If it's a 0.1uF 50V, it's hardly going to need to be low ESR...

But, a 0.1uF cap is probably going to have a 10~20 ohm ESR, and very low ripple. Even the worst CapXon would be fine there. Not that I like that, but...

Almost 40 actually But still, I know I can relly on it. Now can you say that about crapxon?

I'm pretty sure CapXon have nailed down making general purpose caps... just about every capacitor manufacturer in the world has. Low-ESR involves using better electrolytic chemicals and purer foil. I can buy ceramic 0.1uF 50V through hole caps for 0.3p each in 200 quantity packages, and in 0603 SMD packages I can get them for less than 0.1p each.

And how much costs you crapxon lytic? I got VZs for 0,1 USD a piece.

                        Re: Antec SB350 ...whining...

Well I finally got around to taking the Smartblue out and to my surprise this is an SL350. And it uses a UC3844 controller, not a KA7500C -- so it's related to the SP300 not the SP400 that I thought!!! However the 5VSB is the same as pretty much all the CWT's...

Bad Capacitor hunting time... and it's still full of fuhjyyu's. And one Teapo. And two Capxon's...

Just the Fuhjyyus appear to have pressurized and leaking...

And a new observation: Yay I get 6.2V out of 5VSB from this PSU... Hello motherboard killer!

                          Replaced C8 (47uF 25V) and +5VSB is now back down to 5VDC.
                          C8's ESR was pretty bad.

I'll have to replace the output caps some other time but for now they'll have to do. The ripple on the +12V line is also really bad... but it'll have to wait...

Attached is a picture of my 'scope and time for you all to say *ouch* ... Yes that's like 0.7V ripple at about 70KHz is it? That's weird, didn't think these UC3844's go that fast...

Don't use Nichicon VR or VZ in repairs. These are not reliable series, in my opinion.

Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Why not? They are general purpose, I use them instead of chinese GP caps. Many times low-ESR variants are not suitable.
