SH-300ATX with G-Luxon in output

thanks 'galvanized'... I'll get it straight on of these days ;-) ref:my GA-7AXP Ultra in the mobo forum... this machine has a SH-300ATX supply which I find has 'bad caps' in the o/p... I have no problem replacing them, but would also like to add some mem, drives and etc. to this box.. saw pcp&c in the suppliers list and went to look and saw Turbo-Cool 510 ATX which looks nice (?) but quite expensive... any thoughts are welcome...regards...billl

You probably do realize that when the PSU starts sending unclean current to the mainboard, those caps can/will be over worked.

The 510 is a very good unit but would be overkill for 95% of PCs. If your not a serious gamer or powering a server with over 5 HDDs a good 350~400 would serve your needs very well. The big push right now is for quiet with high efficiency. There are the GLN series from Fortron or better yet the ENP-xxxxGH series from Enhance. The well healed swear by the Seasonic S12 series of PSUs. The 380W Seasonic might be worth a look.

My favorite PSU ATM, for most any PC, is the Enhance ENP-5140GH(400W). It will Froogle for about $60, the build quality is good, it uses Teapo caps through out, just as the PCP&C 510 does, it's fairly quiet, but not as quiet as the S12s.

This last link has a power calculator and several tutorials on power supplies. Please do look over jonny's site. His review of the 5140 should be up in a couple of days. Last I talked to him, via PM, he was very impressed with this unit.

The 510 will not be a quiet PSU. If you want to read reviews on quiet power units go to http://www.silentpcreview.com/ I'm not a quiet freak myself but the reviews done at SPCR are VG indeed. They liked the Enhance units very much but were dismayed by the early ramp-up of it's fan. This is a common complaint over there

I'm in love with my new Enermax 420w. A rated 30a on the +3.3 and +5v rails and a maximum of 18a on each +12 (29a total) is plenty of power for almost any machine. Two things: First, I don't know what brand of capacitors it has (I know some of the output caps are the usual mediocre jPCE TUR series) since I haven't opened it up. Second, it's almost silent. I have to hold my ear up to it to hear it, in fact. Not audible over my ceiling fan (which is pretty average), much less my 92mm CPU fan. The fan speed knob in the rear however can only bring the rear 80mm fan up to 1500 rpm, where it moves a very light breeze. I have no idea about its efficiency.

Yeah, I'll shut up now.

This Enhance seems to be a decent unit, but unfortunately not availiable here. Could it be an indication that the other models like ENH-0746GB are from same quality? as those are availiable here, but certainely not as cheap than the mentioned one.
