Re: Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2
Sorry for the dearth of update information, folks... got the new caps from 'TC' and have the old ones out and 'holes' sucked clean, but my progress was interrupted an old lady who tried to kill me at a controlled intersection... she ran a red light according to the county sheriff who was in the car behind her... talk about good witnesses... but she totalled my (wife's) car and almost 'totalled' me, but things are getting back to normal again, so I can continue 'fixing' this mb... hear that confidence?... stay tuned... regards...billl

Weller W60P3
Did I just waste some money??? all the talk about 60 watt irons to recap, and I sent off to all-spec.com and bought a W60P3 Weller three-wire ... which I discover came with a 1/16" 700deg tip... which sounded too hot.. when I look for the lower temp tips (600deg lowest) they are nowhere to be found... did I screw up or can I get in and out with 700deg and not destroy anything... I've dont a lot of soldering before - buss bars to SMD, but need some advice... billl

SLOT-A cleaning
I pulled a slot-a (A0750MPR24B) out of a 'working' GA-71XE to blow the crud out of the heat sink... and now it won't power on... did I miss something stupid???

Re: Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2
thanks gang... I forget what I used to clean the 'pad' remains off the chip, etc.... I'm still hoping it didn't get too hot... I'd thought about the small ones too... I'd like this 'old' socket-A machine to last a while... it was serving me very well..
We'll try the above PSU... caps... etc, schedule and see what happens... thanks all...billl

Re: GA-7VAXP rev 1.1 - recap advise needed
"The fans are now running ok after WD40 was applied. But that doesn't last really long. Guess I need to replace them in the coming week or so..."
'Been my experience that WD-40 may not be the best for that application... it tends to 'lacquer-up' with age and heat... billl

SH-300ATX with G-Luxon in output
thanks 'galvanized'... I'll get it straight on of these days ;-) ref:my GA-7AXP Ultra in the mobo forum... this machine has a SH-300ATX supply which I find has 'bad caps' in the o/p... I have no problem replacing them, but would also like to add some mem, drives and etc. to this box.. saw pcp&c in the suppliers list and went to look and saw Turbo-Cool 510 ATX which looks nice (?) but quite expensive... any thoughts are welcome...regards...billl

Re: Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2
Thanks, linuxguru... btw... when I was cleaning the chip face of 'pad crud' I noticed and faint 'image' of what looked like 'chip circuit' in one corner... is that significant of anything??? ... and I did use Brasso to polish the heat-sink, but the 400grit would probably make a more uniform surface for heat transfer... thanks again...billl

Re: Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2
ok... 3300u@6.3 are SANYO WG, 1500u@6.3 are United Chemicon KZG,
but, 1000u@6.3 are Nichicom HM(m)'s and there are a about a dozen CHOYO 100u@10 and 22u@16 around the periphery
Sounds like then Nichicom HM's might be bad ones and certainly the Choyo's (comments requested)
Also pulled Athlon heat sink, and 'pad' was in bad shape with spotty crust on top of chip... I will use grease to put it back... hope it's still good
Borrowing a known good ATX supply to test..
Any further suggestions appreciated...

Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2
...ahhh, where to begin... got this computer for free and it's been running a couple of years... began to restart, then went down hill fast... presently, won't even post with all busses unplugged and new memory installed... only sign of life is MEM_LED... tried clearing BIOS (has label, but no jumper) by pulling batt for and hour or so... measured voltages as per this forum and seem ok... DO I assume badcaps even though I don't see any that look bad??
a little guidance, please... thanks...billl
