Have an Antec 450W "SmartPower" that is dead

Computer was brought in that wasn't powering up, saw the Stupid Power sitting in there and knew why When plugged in all it gives is a high pitch whine, and when unplugged slowly fades quieter until it's silent. Does this mean that the 5VSB is working? It has an Asia-X cap on the 5VSB and the rest of the caps consist of Teapo, Koshin, Fuhjyyu, the primaries also being Fuhjyyu I dusted it out and removed some glue in it, I'll upload some pics

The whine usually means that the 5vsb is running, but with excess ripple. Give it a complete re-cap (including all of the really small caps) and it should be fine.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Awesome, so you just think that since they're all terrible brand caps that some of them failed without bulging? Should I replace the input caps too?

The small caps fail without bulging. They just dry. The big primary caps can also dry without bulging. If you own an esr meter test every cap!

Okay, I'll replace what I can with the caps that I have now and see if it works, and order some in the meantime and recap the entire thing later. Makes sense, where can I get a good ESR tester for a decent price?

I had 3 Antec SmartPowers in a row fail from bad caps in the 5Vsb, and all the others I had showed bulging Koshin, Teapo, and Fuhjyyu in that circuit. Only the Asia-X caps looked and measured OK.

The SmartPower I am working on was making the same type noise when power was applied. Before proceeding you may want to check the 5VSB voltage level to see how high it is getting. If it is getting too high it will have damaged other components that will have to be replaced. I am currently chasing down the bad ones in mine that were damaged by over-voltage.

I guess I'll just recap the 5VSB to start and see if that does anything. And if any of you guys know, what is the combined 12V output on these PSU's? Here are some pics for those who want to see

                  32Ampere (I just added up the 2 rails )

Isn't it usually lower though by at least a few Amps since it has 2 rails?

It depends on what the rectifiers on that rail are capable of (along with the choice of capacitors and their specs), but if it's one 15A and one 17A rail it probably means that combined it's something like 22A (or 264W), though I could be wrong.

A brand like Antec would state such limitations on the label. By not doing that you can assume that the total 12V amperage is the sum of the 2 rails.

Okay cool, I guess it's worth the recap then

Decided to test the 5VSB and it gives out 0.00V...so pretty sure sign it's the caps?
