    Another re-build (Codegen 450 W)

    This is the first time I've re-built a power supply since my success with the Rexpower. It was a "450W" (more like 450mW) Explodegen. Here's what I did to it.

    2A 4 diode treatment - 6A Rectifier
    470uF HEC primary caps (now, what the hec were they doing there?) - 680uF Panny HC
    No-name 13007 TO-220 switchers - TO-247 Fairchild 13009s
    Extra X-cap and coil on the input filter

    ERL-33 transformer - ERL 35

    16A fast recovery rectifier (for 12V) - 2x SBL2060CT 20A schottky rectifiers
    12A schorrky rectifier (3.3v) - SBL3040PT 30A schottky
    30A schottky rectifier (5v) - 2x STPS3045CW 30A schottkys

    2x 1000uF 10V HEC caps ov 5v and 3.3v - 2x 3300uF 6.3v Panny FK
    1x 1000uF 16V HEC on 12V rail - 3300uF 16V Samxon RS (thx topcat)
    1x 1000uF 10V HEC on 5vsb - 1200uF 6.3V Chemi-con KZE
    470uF 16V HEC on -12V - 470uF 16V Ruby ZL

    Tricod science fan - Delta DSB0812H

    New sleeved connectors (All 18AWG):
    1x 20+4 pin ATX
    1x ATX12V 4 pin
    1x PCI-E 6 pin
    4x SATA
    6x Molex
    1x FDD

    New case from an exploded Bestec

    And last but not least, a new 400W label

    Nice, I'm kind of suppressed they used a 12A rectifier on the 3.3V since most of these cheaper PSUs are older designs and use higher amperage parts on the 5V and 3.3V, I guess they figured the 3.3V rail wasn't that heavily used anymore and there was another place to cut costs.

      Wait... did I say 12A? I meant 20A. In any case, though, 30A is an upgrade

                Very nice PSU rebuild there c_hegge. Doesn't resemble a cheap gutless Codegen anymore at all, excellent work there.

                      Mind you he fouled up the math. 35A at 12V is 420W.

                        Not at all. With two 20A rectifiers, it will do 40A.

                          You're right. I didn't even think of that. I just went "I have 40A capacity, so I'll just de-rate the 12V rail by 5A"

                            If you use efficient rectifiers, you can pull even more than 400W from TO-247 13009 switching transistors.

                                  c_hegge should get this PSU on the load tester to see how close his rebuilt Codegen can do compared to his sticker.

                                      Looks like a pretty decent PSU now.
                                      I still wouldn't pull more than 300W continuous from it, though, just to be safe. Perhaps 350W peak. Also, 35A on the 12V may or may not be possible, even if the 12v rectifiers and the transistors on the primary allow for that kind of power. The winding on the transformer for the 12v rail may not be just up to the task for that. The other possible limitation is the SG6105 PWM controller - you will have to check what the OPP is set to.
                                      Definitely a nice rebuild, though .
