    What is not tested with power supplies...

    I found some tests that were not performed with power supplies on http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/rese...ists/35815.htm

    Most critical of the tests not performed were safety, catastrophic failure protection, overvoltage protection and proper labelling/marking.
    My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

      If they even put an L&C or Deer power supply to a catastrophic failure protection test, I guarantee it wouldn't pass.

              Actually, a Powmax would likely pass.. unfortunately.

              What they should test for is a 500W power supply actually doing 500W.

              I've had 500W Powmax's fail at not even 300W. But typically when they fail the just go "pop" and everything just shuts down with no residual issues.

              The thing that needs to be tested that nobody tests is LONGEVITY.

              MTBF is bunk. It's a calculation based on mathematical equations, not real life testing. A PSU may work great now... or tomorrow... but what about two years from now after heat has deteriated most of the parts inside?

                  Intel is relying on system vendors - the HPs, Dells, etc. - to check a lot of that stuff in their system DVT. Which does nothing for DIYers, small integrators, and repair guys. Or worse than nothing, since their list can steer you wrong.

                      Hi,

                      Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.


                      The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

                      Hi all!

                      I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

                      I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.
