How long will my power supply last?

I just got a new Fortron FSP400-60PFN power supply. I opened it up (there was no sticker saying that I'd void the warranty) and checked to see what kind of caps it has. I saw a few CapXon, a few Teapo, and some others but I couldn't tell what brand they were (too many wires and other things in the way).

I notice both CapXon and Teapo are on the bad cap manufacturers list. How long should I expect this PSU to last?

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to buy another FSP400-60PFN as a backup. I have an Athlon Tbird system that primarily draws power on the 5v rail, and most PSUs nowadays supply most of their power on the 12v rail. So if this PSU fails in a year or two or three, and I still want to use my current system, there won't be any PSUs around that deliver the 5v power it needs.

BTW, anyone know what the warranty on Fortron PSUs is? I checked their web site and even the manual, but can't find that information.

I had two power supplies, one had CapXon caps, the other Teapo caps. The one with CapXon was a generic, the one with Teapo was a Delta (came out of old Compaq). Both provided years or service. The Delta, it was in use for 6 years before I gave it away and it still worked when I gave it away, and none of its Teapo caps were bad. The person I gave it to was my neighbour, and he isn't having any problems. The generic, it provided 4 years of service (pretty long for a very light power supply), and the CapXon caps in it were still okay. It still have the generic and it currently powers an old Pentium III 450 system.

You can expect years of service from your new Forton power supply.

When did you first get those PSUs? Sounds like they may have been manufactured before the "bad cap" problem came into existence.

Three years on retail boxed units, 1 year all others if my memory is good.

My 530W is all Teapo - no problems at all after a year and a half except the Yate Loon 80x20mm exhaust fan needed bearings recently. The new 600W is all Capxon and OST - I hope recent OST is better than I've heard. Couldn't find replacements for those 2200uf 16v 10mm diameter caps.

It would be convenient, for discussion anyway, if it could be said that XYZ brand's caps are unsuitable for any use. Reality is that even the worst of what are commonly called "crap caps" on this board could probably survive long term if the ripple current and temp the caps are subjected to aren't too stressful. Also, one of the problems crap cap mfrs probably have is process control. This means they may occasionally produce batches that are pretty good.

If a P/S mfr uses crap caps conservatively, they may fail to live down to their potential.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
                by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
                by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
                by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
                by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....
