    NEWTON POWER NPS-180 Can't Start

    Hi all,
I have some problem with my newton's power supply. The purple line have 5 volts but it can't start.
So i decided to replace caps in secondary side but nothing changes.
If anyone can help me please tell me howto fix it.
I attached some pictures of this power supply.
    Thanks All.

Check for secondary side shorts, if no shorts, check that the controller is powered on and operating. You will need an oscilloscope or a multimeter with frequency display for this. If the controller is working, most likely primary transistors have failed open.

      Thanks Th3_uN1Qu3 but i don't know howto
      1.check the shorts
      2.i can't find controller datasheet ("2M4 1000DS" label)
3.primary transistors, could you specify for me.

Could you please write in the pictures , i provided?

Re: NEWTON POWER NPS-180 Can't Start

When you try to power the PSU on, does the fan twitch quickly or is it totally dead? If the fan twitches, then the problem is most likely in the secondary somewhere. Either a shorted component or a failed controller/monitoring IC.

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

If the controller were failed the power supply wouldn't start at all.

Re: NEWTON POWER NPS-180 Can't Start

I meant a faulty protection circuit shutting the PSU down even though there isn't really a problem.

Never seen that one happen. On the other hand i have seen a power supply that kept running just fine while its monitoring circuit was pouring out smoke.

I know it's not very likely, but I'm sure it's possible.

shorted component not found , i checked all resistors and diodes and transistors.

i suspec in controller/monitoring IC , can i replace another one instead?

label on front of controller is "2M4 1002DS" < Is it a controller we need?

No... but i think some of those parts around it did. Does the power supply work normally, with no trouble, with stable voltages, when the two pins are shorted? If so, you could just leave it like that and call it a day. It is probably one of the protections, if the power supply is working normally they do not need to fire.

If you want to fix it, look for cracked soldering and open resistors around it. Check voltages between each pin and ground when they are not shorted together, it'll give us a better chance of understanding what that section does.

This is the most common version of NPS-180 but there are others.

All of these NPS-180 PSUs are interchangeable:

Perhaps if you search for different numbers you can find one in Thailand.

Dell Optiplex GX260 Small Desktop PSU should be easy even there.
