I checked it, it doesn't work. When I turn it on, the indicator lights up for one second and then goes out, nothing else happens.

I saw someone doing them via USB, it's probably much simpler.
He should reread a dump to see if it deletes everything!

I'm interested in learning how to do this myself and am wondering, is the CH341A the recommended programmer for this task? I see it mentioned here a bunch, but I looked at the stickied thread and it says it's not recommended.

I've had really good luck with the CH341A Black. You'll need a WSON8 6x8 "pogo" probe if you don't desolder the chip. Use NeoProgrammer with the CH341 on the FZ-55D. Be aware you'll need completely remove the motherboard to read the chip on the back of the mother board. Panasonic did not make this easy (on purpose) but it's not too difficult.
