    hp dv5000 series bios problem

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-061: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM

I can access bios and change the booting order (it think it's booting from a network according to error) but to no avail.

I'm guessing the problem is hardware-based or something.

    Anybody?

Could be the southbridge, apparently it does not see the hard drive and DVD. Does it boot from USB?

Re: hp dv5000 series bios problem

Disable boot with PXE... They used to use that for computers that would boot of a NIC's rom which could be flashed...

I guess the question is then why isn't it booting from the HDD? Plug the HDD into a desktop motherboard and see if it is detected by the BIOS.

I can't disable the Network boot, only change the priority of the boot sequence (I set the network to last). NO dice. Or maybe I misunderstood you.

Yeah, my second guess is that it might have to do with the hard drive. I shall test this and report back.

Ah, interesting. These HPs are plagued with GPU/Bridge defects. It might even require a quick reflow.

I haven't tried USB booting -- but like I said, it can't boot from anything. It goes straight to that error right after the HP bios logo.

            OK -- update.

Turns out the hard drive is bad. So I swapped it out.

The next problem is that when I start and try to do a Windows (XP) CD installation it automatically shuts down right after the first step of the process is loaded. So right after "Windows is starting installation" then it does so without warning or anything. Just shuts down.

            This happens also with 7.

Any other way of installing the OS on a laptop that doesn't support USB booting?

I think your Northbridge has bit the dust, in a manner of speaking. Symptom of G8x, G9x IGP failure is random reboot or screen corruption when attempting to use higher resolutions. I think that when the graphical part of the installation starts, the IGP flips out.

You can try to reflow, it might help. Flux it up nice and good.

OK, if there's any other solution I'm all ears on this one.

Bios is Phoenix F.42. Laptop's an HP dv5224nr.

Re: hp dv5000 series bios problem

                  Spec sheets states:

                  "ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP"

So this is not an nVidia chipset, but the 200M has also been known to require reflowing. I don't think that's the problem.

Could the automatic shutdown have something to do with heat? What kind of adapter are you using?

I'm using the standard HP adapter 18.5V that came with it.

but don't u think it's weird that right after, BEFORE the GUI interface, it shutdowns with no warning? I think this is before it loads anything onto the hd.

With both the XP and 7 installation media? Yes, very odd. Are these install discs vanilla MSDN ISOs or are they modified with slipstreaming or with driver packs?

They are standard ISOs, freshly burned.

Any chance this is a dvd drive problem?

Wish I had extra hardware to test this out !

sounds like it may be getting hot, blow the heat sink out it may be so plugged with dust you won't feel much heat exiting out ,,,check after blowing out with flashlight in intake area to make sure big clumps are not lodging fan , sometimes you can use toothpicks to fish out the clumps, if not it will need to be dissembled to thoroughly clean it, if you use a air compressor use a toothpick to lock fan in place to prevent it from spinning faster then it's intended "burns up the bushings or bearings", and avoid going higher then 45 psi most compressors have a regulator you can turn down psi...

canned air works if the dust ain't too thick, if it is thick it will struggle. or simply dismantle and clean er out...

update; got it to work with windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. but there are no sound drivers available for it.

for some reason, it crashes and gets BSOD under a Win XP (64-bit) installation.

anyone have any solutions to this? should i try to download an OEM HP copy of Win xp media center that supposedly comes with it?

If that doesn't work, I may have to downgrade the whole thing to 32-bit.

                                        From http://www.w7forums.com/ati-radeon-x...-t2378p2.html:

This is what to do and if you follow precisely, will be alright:

                                        1) Download this and run it so it extracts to C:\ATI

                                        ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp35001-35500/sp35203.exe

                                        2) Close the installer immediately after extraction is done. Do not continue with install.

                                        3) Open device manager. Double click Display adapters section. Right click on standard vga and then choose update driver software. Then click the following:

Browse my computer, let me pick, have disk. browse.

Now navigate to within C:\ATI to where the .inf files are in the driver folder. Click or double click on the first one while shown in alphabetical order.

Hit ok then hit next and it will install.

                                        5) Reboot and then choose an Aero theme and then also run the WEI score updater.

Please let us know how this goes for ya and let us know if any complications.

Hello. I am asking you for a hint on how to solve the problem with my touchbook Panasonic CF53-2 standart model. After setting up the BIOS, the laptop displays the wrong image until Windows loads. (More precisely, it displays, but distorted, instead of the Panasonic image immediately after turning it on, it displays what is in photo #1 in the attached file) Then the image appears when Windows starts loading and then there are no problems with the screen until the reboot. If you enter the BIOS, just a black screen. If you connect an external screen, the image on it is the same as on the built-in...
