Help needed: 2020 MacBook Pro M1 A2338 (keyboard and trackpad not working)

    Hello,

Please I need help on how to fix a 2020 MacBook Pro M1 A2338 for which it's keyboard and trackpad aren't working at all

I've done thorough inspection on the board and didn't find any corrosion, checked a few things but since I'm new to MacBook repairs, I'm lost at the moment

System works fine save for the keyboard and trackpad that won't work

    Would appreciate any kinda help

    Hi.

    1) post pics of the keyboard cable connectors.

    2) first check should be to confirm the keyboard cable contacts are clean and the flat fpc cable is firmly inserted inside the typical blade connector. Have not worked with this model but should be a black blade style that you lift most likely from the back side to release or insert the flat cable. Down the latch to secure it.

Check if there is a white topside stripe on this cable.

The cable may be defective and needs to be replaced.

Either way, work on these checks only after power is off and battery connector / screw is removed. Otherwise, power is present on the board and can cause permanent damage.

Test with an external keyboard or mouse to see if that works ok. You may require a usb-c hub with usb-A connectors to mate the external keyboard or mouse.

Test with another OS booting from usb media to rule out the OS as a fault.

Ive tried external keyboard and Logitech mouse, all works fine, also tried an Apple external mouse, works too but the main keyboard and mouse aren't responsive

On the cabling, is the trackpad cable separate or with the keyboard?

That is, can you remove the trackpad cable and still test the keyboard? Do not force the removal of the trackpad cable unless it is socketed.

Trackpad cable is different from the keypad, tried the option,

tested keyboard alone, no luck, tired trackpad alone, no luck as well, both aren't showing signs of life

meanwhile, no light on the keyboard as well, was trying to trace the backlight voltage of the kbd (maybe reverse engineering, testing all the options available to me), but since I don't even know the voltage I should be looking for, it makes the fix harder, was trying to follow the path of a 2017 MacBook that works fine, but both boards are totally distinct from what I've seen on their schematics

Did you remove the trackpad from C case, and check the back of the trackpad?
Is it clear at the back of trackpad?

Keyboard working need KBD_INT_L, I2C_KBD_SDA, and I2C_KBD_SCL, which are come through JT400.

Maybe there is a water damage at the back of the trackpad, which cause the problem.
OR, check the voltage of these three line. normal voltage?

My daughter's A2338 MBP has the same symptoms--keyboard and trackpad stopped working simultaneously. It sounds like a motherboard failure since both bombed at the same time, IMO. Just wondering what your final outcome was?

I already replaced the trackpad with no luck so it seems futile to spend hours replacing the keyboard if it's the motherboard.

Motherboard issue for sure replaced a number of these for failing trackpad and keyboard, however on some instances it has been the top-case as it was telling the machine it was night night time which of course shuts down any ancillary components OXY !

you can check the voltages on JT400, do you have PPBUS_AON, IPD_LID_OPEN1v8, if yes it might be issue with some I2C lanes or some logic chips from the other side. Usually for me it has been the trackpad connector issues, either 1 lane is not connected or not getting enable signal

Hi! This Mac has been an headscratcher for me, I can't seem to figure out the issue. The Macbook has gotten water damage to the front of the keyboard connector and battery connector. The keyboard connector was dead, by which I mean it was completely corroded and I have replaced it with a brand new one.
I have verified all the pins are connected to the main board and the main voltages (PP1V8_AONSW_KBD_ISNS and PP3V3_AON_KBD_CONN) are both present, with and without keyboard attached.

Unfortunately, the keyboard does NOT want to work, caps lock LED not functioning as well as any...

a2338 2020 Macbook Pro liquid damaged won't turn on- weird issue
                            by bigbadbios
                            Hi,
I am trying to fix this liquid damaged 2020 Macbook pro and I noticed something weird.
When I push on/around the renesas 501cr0b IC, which appears to be a clock generator/ multiplier, If I apply lot of pressure, the device will reach 19.9 volts and seems to be trying to work.
I have thoroughly reflowed that area and completely removed that chip (there was some liquid stain in that area) but no help. I have just 5v 0a unless I apply the pressure.
Your help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

                            Hi all

i have a 2338 which had no display (there is a little crack near the edge to the case) but worked with external display. Some weeks later it didn`t boot anymore.
USB Tester shows 5,18v, 0,08 a and 0,38w with power supply.
                            With battery connected i get 20v and 0,0 a
Thermal camera shows that U0500 is heating up to 30c.

                            F5200 is not shorted
Visual inspection didn't show any problems.

I'm sure that i need to change the display but what can i do to find my other problem with the board?...

                            Hey everyone,

Usually, I'm not the type to ask for help, but this time, I'm calling on your wisdom and expertise I've seen what this community can do, so I'm pretty sure you guys can help me out.

Here's the deal: I noticed my MacBook got stuck in a boot loop. After opening it up and doing some initial troubleshooting, I found that the boot loop stops only when the trackpad is unplugged.

Now, just so you know, the trackpad actually works β€” I tested it with another motherboard and it's all good. Same for the cable, no issues there. The problem is only...
