MacBook Pro 15" 2016 820-00281 no backlight. Another flexgate issue?

Hello, I bought this machine from a friend. It's a 15 inch MacBook Pro 2016 model, logic board 820-00281. He said that the screen would go off if open more than a certaing angle but it's perfect working whit an external display.

The backlight screen remains stay off even if I open just a little the lid, so I never see backlight work, but I can confirm that LCD show images as using a torch I can see it on the screen. It seems also that camera is not rocognized as the keyboard backlight stay off and touchbar have full brightness.

Is this a classic flexgate issue? I never manage to repair this kind of thing before but I wont try. How I can identity the damaged area of the backlight flex cable to select where to cut?. If you can give me any suggestion to improve the work or a guide it would be really appriciated.

But, if it's not a flexgate problem? How I can check the backlight circuit? What i should measure whit multimeter?

    Really, really thanks..

These are 3 different approach on how to solve this. What is the best?

This is easiest and most durable / cable breaks very close to connector both backlight and camera suffer flexgate problem / I have used this method to repair the camera cable also - incredible small ribbon wires

TIPS : cut connector off screen side - strip about 2-3 mm of both cables to expose copper / tin then wick both cables to ready overlap joint / use iron to melt and remove a 3mm portion of backside donor cable - thus making it transparent / add flux and align copper traces / use tweezers and iron start soldering on one side moving across the traces one at a time - Don't try to solder all of them at the same time / leave a small amount of traces exposed and use meter to make sure ground is not touching backlight traces

FYI i use full temp iron and regular leaded solder

Just harvest a cable from a cracked screen

No, the best approach should be the first solution - Contact Apple and demand that they fix this fault they created. They chose a too short of a flex cable in the PCBA.

It is flexgate. If you are polite but firm, they will cover the repair - regardless of warranty. Climb up their phone support ladder till you receive a positive response for a repair. They have been sued for this fault.

          agreed ...should be covered

I have had many clients come from Apple store with no luck.

These 2016 models normally won't get covered ...but you should complain.

Forget the Apple store - phone them and do not stop till you have a resolution.

They support clients who buy their products - more products, the better the service. It is all about how smooth you are in chatting with them. Make it clear that you will not buy their product unless they can resolve this issue which is their fault to start with. We have countless stories where they did cover the service, even after the warranty.

Officially, only 13" models are covered, and that's only 2016 models. These were only produced from October that year, so it only equates to a few months. 2017 models are flat out rejected by Apple and the last price I heard quoted was AUD$1100.

BTW, replacement displays I've seen from China still have the flexes the same length. I bought one a while back and the camera failed not long after I got it. You are better off doing the cut and solder on a new flex hack if you have the skill.

The T1 MAC's are just plain awful if I'm honest and not worth stuffing with. The butterfly keyboards in these are just awful, and ridiculously expensive to replace.

MacBook Air A2337 (820-02016) USB-C Port Issue – Only Works in One Orientation (CC Line Problem?)
                by rounin
                Hi everyone,

I'm working on a MacBook Air 2020 (A2337, board 820-02016) and running into a strange USB-C issue. I've gone through quite a bit of testing and part replacement, but I'm stuck — hoping someone here can shed some light.

                🛠 Original Issue
                The machine initially wouldn't negotiate 20V over USB-C — stuck at 5V.
Diagnosis showed PP1V5_UPC0_LDO_CORE shorted to ground.

I replaced U3100 (UF400) using a donor board (A2179), and the machine powers on fine now.

Subject: Help Needed: MacBook A1278 (3115) No PPBUS_G3H Issue

                Hello everyone,

I'm working on a MacBook A1278 with the 3115 logic board and facing an issue with no PPBUS_G3H voltage. Here's what I've checked so far:
                1. U7000 Measurements:
                  • Pin 3 has 0V, even though R7012 shows 16.5V from PPDCIN_S5_CHGR.
                2. Resistors:
                  • I measured R7010 and R7011 with one leg disconnected, and both tested OK.

Based on these findings, I believe U7000 needs to be replaced. However, I have a related question:
                • If I also decide to replace the SMC, do I need to order it pre-programmed,
                ...

                by sofles
                Hello there

I have problem with Macbook Pro 15" 2017, model 2017, MB code 820-00928.

I bought it as broken with some artefacts on the screen, first I thought that this is problem with ribbon cable but after inspectiing ribbon cable I know it is fine. I tried to reinstall macOs and then I figured out that this must be something with GPU as installation freezes at the end (when drivers are loaded). I installed Windows and was able to install every each of drivers except GPU driver, as soon as I tried to install GPU driver - black screen and restart.

A2141 MacBook Pro 16" lid sensor issue.
                by Stephen
Just like the title states. I have been confused at this point. Computer won't turn on when lid angle sensor is plugged in, when unplugged it turns on immediately, however I have tried 4 different lid angle sensors all OEM and calibrated without issue. I even pulled one from a donor computer and still nothing. I know the M1 Pro sensors are married to the board however I do know the 2019 intel are not as long as they came from a donor LCD etc. What I do not get is why is the lid angle sensor forcing the computer to not turn on, another issue I see when the lid angle sensor is disconnected...

MacBook Pro 2019 820-01700 Speaker amp issue.
                by Gueric
I have this MacBook Pro on my bench that I have already fixed, hard short on a SSD rail, but it also has another issue. the right speaker sound is either earrape, muffled or absent. Left one works perfect. I have tried replacing it, nothing changed so I'm pretty sure the issue is either motherboard related or maybe software but I doubt that.

I don't how to troubleshoot speakers. Any help would be very much appreciated.

A refurbisher and a repair shop have already been inside the laptop but I'm pretty sure none of them tried to do any soldering on the board.
