MacBook Pro A1708 - CPU extremely slow, locked @ 0.39ghz; fan full speed

    Hi forum.

I'm working on a macbook pro, model a1708, that is running extremely slow.

Everything on it seams to work just fine, it just works extremely slow; painfully slow; especially running macos (windows and linux actually run OKish on it, slow, but usable).
One other symptom of the problem with the machine is that the fan is always running at full speed.

This machine has been worked on by someone else previously; they tried to repair it, but with no success. The motherboard does have sings of being worked on, but it all looks good/OK; like I said before, the system is, for the most part, fully working.

The previous person that worked on the machine just told me that he suspected that it was a problem with some sensor, but couldn't figure out more. Once I was told that the computer ran extremely slow with fan at full speed, that was also my initial guess; that it would be some issue with some sensor.

So, to start with it, I did a full visual inspection of the motherboard under the microscope, to look for any liquid damage, corrosion, burned/damaged components or any other fiscal damage; it all looked good expected for a broken off capacitor that had been ripped of the motherboard; I knew that it wouldn't be the cause of the issue, but I replaced it and fixed the cap anyways.

Next; and because I had an identical machine laying around, and to rule out any issue with trackpad, flex cabels, battery, display, etc, I swapped motherboards with a know good working machine; the anomalies persist. So, not the display, not the trackpad, etc etc.

Next, since I had an equal fully working motherboard, with the motherboards side by side, I started measuring and comparing voltages, 20v ok, etc etc etc. Couldn't for the life of me find anything off on the motherboard.

I have spend hours measuring and comparing the boards, with no luck. I then booted linux and took a reading of the sensors, in hope you guys could point me in the right direction on this one; because i'm at a lost on this one.

Most of the sensors with odd readings I either can't identify them on the schematic/boardview, or they are not even on the motherboard.

Would really appreciate some help/guidance on this one guys.

    Thank you very much,
    Dia

    1) it is very late for you ?

    2) what is the 820-xxxx of your logic board?

    3) Review this video from Louis and post your updates:

Its 03:12 right now; so yeah, a bit late. But I prefer it; I tend to work the "graveyard shift".

Sorry for not posting that info in the first place, silly me. Motherboard is a 820-00840-A.

I had already previously reviewed that (and many other) video(s) from Louis; that's why I swapped motherboards just to rule out any issue with the display; I even followed that specific video troubleshooting steps, with no luck.

        1) Is a suitable USB Type C power adapter being used to power this unit? Suggest any 90-100W power adapter with power delivery support. We used the LVSUN for a while till someone stiffed us on Ebay and their theft of logic board parts (BGA with solder shorts and all) burnt out this nice adapter. Ebay refunded all in full and allowed us to keep the macbook.

CUI is a good unit for us as well.

Can the same power adapter power your known good unit at full / proper speed ?

        2) Sensors often are applied with the I2C (SMBUS) interface.

        Review the voltage of:

        SMBUS_SMC_1_S0_SCL
        SMBUS_SMC_1_S0_SDA

        SMBUS_SMC_5_G3H_SCL
        SMBUS_SMC_5_G3H_SDA

We are hunting for stuck I2C logic levels which may indicate a fault that will halt proper communication and temp feedback to the bus master. I2C is an open-drain specification which should default to the pull-up voltage for each leg of these runs.

Yes, a suitable USB type C power adapter is being used; I have tried three genuine apple power adapters and a couple of 3rd party ones, 90w+, and they all do the same anomaly. They will all negotiate to 20v. Also, they all work fine on the other known good working mackbook; the machine works fine at full speed with all of them.

As for the voltage readings you asked:

            SMBUS_SMC_1_S0_SCL - 3.3v
            SMBUS_SMC_1_S0_SDA - 3.3v

            SMBUS_SMC_5_G3H_SCL - 3.4v
            SMBUS_SMC_5_G3H_SDA - 3.4v

I already tried another palm rest/trackpad, and same anomaly happens. I also tried this one on another board and it works fine.

Maybe Ts0P on this motherboard relates to something different. Can you give me a little more please?

Be sure to test with known good interface cables for the keyboard / trackpad.

I did; I don't think its the trackpad or cable; I swapped motherboards with another macbook and the anomaly remained; different chassis, different cables, different keyboard, trackpad, etc; and same anomaly; also, the known good motherboard works fine on this system; so I don't think it's an issue with trackpad.

Also, on this motherboard schematic I can't find any reference to Ts0P; is it called something else? Where would I go to follow its circuit and troubleshoot it?

Try a SMC bypass. Does this allow for a faster logic board?

Boot MAC into Diagnostics mode (D on bootup) and see if there is an error. Any missing sensor data and the firmware will force the processor to throttle. I have seen a defective SSD itself on a Macbook Air throttle the system, so also swap it to rule it out.

If you ruled out external things, then check around thermal sensor IC's U5800/U5810/U5870 for corrosion etc under the BGA, especially the Vdd pad (pin 8 or 16). Highest current pad usually corrodes the quickest. You can lift these off to check.

Hi, have a Macbook air with 820-3437-B with a weird problem.

It starts and seems to stop at the very beginning of POST, there is no chime and no access to usb boot pen-drive.

Current consumption is near 500 mili amps and seems not to do anything/

The weird issue is that if left it in this state "booting", the chime sounds about 4 minutes from start, and 2 minutes later I can see the pendrive led blinking and back-light is on. About 2 minutes more the progress bar starts, but in very slow motion.

It takes more than 30 minutes to show...

                              Hello

I'm 40, french IT guy, my wife have a MacBook Pro F-keys i5 13-inch Mid-2017 wich is VERY slow, fan don't turn at full speed, airport and motherboard sensors indicate 128 degrees
I tried to unplug the screen, the webcam, reset SMC... without effect

I've watch many videos about sensors issues, but all of the videos talk about fan turning at full speed which is not my case
do you have any idea ? what is wrong?

Hey guys, I need a little help here. I have a MacBook Pro A1708 820-00840 stuck @ 5V. Started off affecting just one port but now it's affecting both. Both CD3215 ics were replaced but the issue remains. One port does a loop and the other stays at a constant 5V. Both CD3215 have 3V incoming. I checked for PP3V3_G3H @ R3000, C3100 and C3108, R3001, C3200 and C3208. The weird thing is though that the ammeter shows the current draw (5V @ 0.5A) coming out from the port as opposed to it going in. Any ideas on helping me fix this?
