Macbook pro A1708 820-00840 not turning on

hi everyone, i have this macbook 13 "A1708, motherboard 820-00840-A.
A few months ago I smelled a slight burning smell coming from the right side of the keyboard. I didn't give it much weight, the macbook had no problems.
From 3 days it is no longer turning on, I removed the motherboard and there seems to be a burnt capacitor in that area.

can you tell me what i could do first?

    Thanks

Desolder that capacitor and power up again. The part should not be missed if you decide to use as-is (without this capacitor) but in general, replace with a valid replacement.

    33uf 16volt tantalum Case B1 size

    Here is a valid cross:

    https://www.mouser.ca/ProductDetail/...qMcZ4kIQ%3D%3D

There are many such parts in the market - the more you pay, the lower the ESR and other features. Lower ESR = higher current support for that power rail. Note that there are numerous capacitors on the rail so each will carry the burden of the current support - much like a group of us lifting a car - it can be done. But by yourself, it will be difficult or impossible...unless you are Arnold.

      thank you, it worked.

Just one question: I removed the capacitor but I don't understand if the circled area red is part of the capacitor or the motherboard pad

so i have to remove it?

Looks to be the exposed pad of the circuit board. The large rectangular shape is the landing pad for the component = your capacitor. If you scrape enough, the top coating = hot air solder leveling will be removed and will expose the copper trace that does the real job of connecting to other traces.

As long as the part can be soldered onto the landing pads (one for each side of the part) - you are good to go !! Do not worry about the small piece of exposed copper.

Well done on the repair !!

          Thank you mon2!

I wanted to buy the capacitor from the site you gave me.
I live in Italy and for a € 0.77 condenser I have a delivery of € 20 with fedex, it seems a bit too much.

Do you know any other site that sells this product in europe or china?

Yes, AliExpress will have them but the mainstream vendors use a branded capacitor. So we can confirm with the datasheet if the part can handle the peak current or not. In China, unless you work with the manufacturer, it is hard to believe the specs the vendor states.

Let me check and post back with options later today.

Re: Macbook pro A1708 820-00840 not turning on

                here are some suggestions:

                1) install the app for the Aliexpress website or goto aliexpress.com website with your browser

                2) search for '33uf 16v tantalum B' keywords to locate this component in the 'B' size so that the component will land on the 2 soldering pads on the PCB.

                3) found a well received store here:

                https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...24123390%7Csea

                < see attached >

                4) Option # 1 - you could order from the above store or another as your choice.

Option # 2 - (we have done this in the past many times) - share the above details with the store that has the mosfets & charger IC - ask if they can source this part or replacement. Sometimes you can do this and the benefit is that the single store will ship all of the goods so you could save on the 2 different shipping fees.

MacBook Pro A1708 820-00840 stuck @ 5V, no power, no charging
                    by EpicFix
Hey guys, I need a little help here. I have a MacBook Pro A1708 820-00840 stuck @ 5V. Started off affecting just one port but now it's affecting both. Both CD3215 ics were replaced but the issue remains. One port does a loop and the other stays at a constant 5V. Both CD3215 have 3V incoming. I checked for PP3V3_G3H @ R3000, C3100 and C3108, R3001, C3200 and C3208. The weird thing is though that the ammeter shows the current draw (5V @ 0.5A) coming out from the port as opposed to it going in. Any ideas on helping me fix this?

                    Hi everyone!

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro (with Sequoia OS) that I've been using for years with no problem. I recently received an M2 MacBook Pro so I'm mostly using it and not the 2018 one, but since a friend of mine needs a computer, I thought I could restore my 2018 and give it brand-new-like to my friend.

I tried using the built-in tool to restore the MacBook (Settings > General > Transfer or restore > Delete) but it got stuck when trying to remove the Find Device configuration (it asked me for the password for my old Apple ID -now I use the same account but...

                    Macbook Pro 14 2021 - A2442 - 820-02098-A not turning on 5v fluctuation
                    by Rickkap
I would like some help with this MacBook if possible. It came in with not turning on and the Magsafe light was off. After inspecting the logicboard i cannot find any liquid damage and also no burnt or shorted components.
took some measurement and i can see i have fluctuation on PP3V3_S2 and also PP5V_S2_MAIN amongst other rails. Using the thermal camera RC282 & RC283 were pulsing, but after removing these it was still the same.

I then did some investigation into why the rails were pulsing and noticed that P5VS2_PWR_EN (comes from U8100) is also doing the same thing.....

                    Hi everybody

                    I have Macbook A1708 820-00840
It goes through all steps to start
exclude last steps power PPVCCCPU_S0G and PPVCCGT_S0G

                    Besides, no exchange on
                    CPU_VIDSCLK
                    CPU_VIDSOUT

                    However CPU_PWRGD is OK
                    CPU_PROCHOT is down.

I replaced SPI dump from here:
                    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...n-me-pram-bios
                    Unfortunately did't help me.
