    presicion M65 MB dead?

Ok so i have a dell presicion M65.got it for free.ok so the person that had it said it had a bios password no problem for me.but i got it home and plugged it in and nothing no lights no LEDs dead.so i opened it up down to just the motherboard.plugged the AC adapter in and still nothing.but i noticed that the board is getting some power 2 chips get really hot one of these chips is a maxim 8731e it gets so hot that it'll burn ur fingure.heats up instanly 1-2 secs.and if left powered up u can smell it cooking. also the other chip is located below the wwlan card slot cant fully read it but it has "tps" on it.it gets hot aswell but not burning hot and it seems to get hot cool off the repeat over and over.something to point out is the maxim chip doesnt get hot at all when just the battery is powering the system(still dead no lights at all)the battery has a full charge swaped out of a working M65.when power is applied to the system AC\battery or both nothing no fan no sounds just the hot chips on the board.i have the time to fix it just not real sure where to start.any ideas would help. even radical ones ill try after all it was a complety free laptop.the guy i got it from said that last time he messed w\ it that it did power up to the bios password screen.he might have been mistaken tho.i have the stinking password for this machine just no life at all in the machine?if i remove the TPS chip (the one that gets warm not cooking)in theroy would the laptop still work w\ out this chip? cpu, mem, adapter, battery is good swapped it w\ a working M65. PLZ help

Welcome to the forums Joeman, The Maxim chip is the battery charging controller so it makes perfect sense it does not heat up without a/c. It is also used as a power o.k. check to perform power up and boot. The tps chip is most likely a blown mosfet , Shorted internally. will not lie to you swapping the MAX8731 is a pain in the @#%$ without the proper rework station. The tps chip you will definitely need the number (either from the chip or schematic) to check it out tho.

tps is a ti prefix for their dc-dc converter chips.

DOH! I thought he wrote fds, I really need better glasses...

If I remember correctly those are found in the 5v sections (amongst others) for USB power. I had one that was having trouble booting, chip was heating up. It ended up being a broken off piece of a thumb drive stuck in usb port.

How can I be sure that my EC chip is dead?
            by double_DD
            Hi all,

As the title suggests, how can I be sure that my EC chip is really dead?

I've recently gotten into this hobby of laptop repairs, and have successfully brought back to life a couple with some easy fixes, mostly shorted caps.

Now I'm working on HP Probook 455 G8, that had some "devil" run around on 3V line, burning a bunch of stuff. Luckily I have a dead 455G7 (for spare parts) so I managed to fix it (swapped burned parts) to a point that it will charge (both on barrel jack and usb-c), but it doesn't want to turn on. There is a 3V3 on a keyboard...

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
            by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

Laptop dead after replacing BIOS Chip
            by bigbadbios
            Hi all,
I have an ASUS ROG Strix G533z 12th gen i9 laptop that had no video.
I suspected BIOS corruption, so I took the main BIOS chip off and replaced it with another one that had a clean BIN I bought online.
After doing so, the device is stone dead. Even with the original chip fitted back.
I sent it to Northridge Fix (I am based in US) and he said no activity on thermal cam and no power issue is not directly firmware related.
Can anyone help? I'd love to save this fairly new and powerful laptop.
            Thank you!

I tried soldering a new one (hot air), same symptoms, no response from power button and
ITE 8655e GXS chip is getting hot.

What can make that chip get hot? Thanks...

Best place to source RAM chips? 8GB 820-00850 boards to 16GB or 32GB
            by ugamazing
I'm looking to upgrade several 8GB 820-00850 boards to 16GB or 32GB for personal use. I am curious what the best practice and process is for sourcing new replacement chips, and what vendor(s) you guys prefer? Another question is, how do I find compatible chips and their corresponding part/model numbers? For example, in the 820-00850 schematic, the DDR chip U2600 model listed (EDFB232A1MA) corresponds to 1x32GB chip. Of course, I would need 4x8GB chips to replace the 4x2GB chips currently on the board. How do I find compatible 8GB chips? Is it as simple as searching "BGA178 8GB 2133"...
