Re: Gateway 700G repair didn't take
I was ready to trash one of these units as well, recapped the PS [ (5) 470uf @ 25v & (4) 220uf @ 25v GF SAMXON originals 3 of the 470s were leaking ] and still had same problem. No power indicator light, and it would almost pulse faint light flashes- hard to see in daylight but still enough to draw your eye. Checking the rail voltages at the header gave a pulsing 5v rail that was clicking at same freqency as display flash, and a low 10.4v on the 12v rail.
From the another thread on the 900g I noticed EGuevarae (and stroogly )had repaired...

Re: Toshiba satellite a105-s4074 problem
Did you try clearing the escd ? Disconnect power cable, pull battery and hold power button down for 40 seconds or so. Then reinstall battery and power cord. It should re-recognize memory and self assign ranges to devices.

Re: V3000 Intel No Display At LCD But Got Display On External Monitor
If you shine a flashlight on screen can you make out an image ? Try moving cursor and shine light in area it should be displayed in (same area as external monitor). If you see anything you have a bad inverter or ccfl. Inverter is an easy fix. CCFL, not so much...

Re: dv6500 dead
I meant a larger area, not a component close up. Great pic though. I was looking to see if the component key was located on the board nearby.

Re: dv6500 dead
Need a bigger area photo. If you look at the group of components there you will notice a white line around the group. The component legend will be in a same shape box that is connected by a white line. I was looking at pics I have of similar board, I do not see the legend on my pictures. I am pretty sure it is a diode tho. Send me a pm with e-mail addy and I'll shoot you schematics I have.

Re: PTGD1-LA 1 cap in backwards ???
An FYI here:
Turns out that one (inserted wrong at factory) bulged while it was on the bench. I guess fixing all the other problems finally made it let go. It still runs fine with no outward symptoms, I was just giving it the one final visual for dust bunnies before I closed it up and shipped it. When I replace it I will check voltage before I insert new cap, just to be safe.

Re: PTGD1-LA 1 cap in backwards ???
That is how I put them in -the second time... Yes, I replaced the PS caps as well. The one cap in question is actually installed stripe on the white half. The machine is up and running like that. It is on the other bench running updates....

PTGD1-LA 1 cap in backwards ???
First off a confession, and a self nomination for bonehead of the week. I took in an HP media center pc with an ASUS PTGD1-LA motherboard. No power up was the issue. So I look inside and see the VRM section has all 4 caps bulged, 2 others 820uf @ 6.3v bulged as well. A quick peek inside the 300w P.S. reveals 3 more 2 (2200uf @ 16v) and 1 (1000uf @ 10v). So I replace them all, test P.S. <checks good> and power up motherboard. It spins fans for 1~2 seconds and shuts down. Seems like P.S. is crow barring so maybe it is not fixed after all. (note: customer has added additional drive and high-end...

Re: Laptop Motherboard Repair
Can you post a picture of that area of the board? My schematics aren't matching up. I just went through this and found a bad zener as well as the 2 mosfets were needed....

Re: Dell E171FP saved ... almost ... well maybe
Here are the pics:
First picture swollen cap on inverter
Second is original group of power supply - nothing visually bad (just CapXon on the label)
Third is new caps in final configuration (3) 1500uf@16v + 470uf@25v on the 5v rail, (3) 1000@16v on 12v rail.
I did not get a full picture of the AD board but after recap but you can see some of the radials sticking up in the last shot. Those are 100uf@16v one was an sm the other thru-hole. I also replaced a few 10uf@10v.

Dell E171FP saved... YESSSSSS!!!!!
Gold star to jetadm123 !!! You nailed it, I was figuring the 10% would be close enough given the tolerances but 4500 did not cut it.
I added the 470uf that was in my original replacement group to bump up the total to 4970uf albeit 100uf more than original and 470uf more than my first try, it is working like a champ ! I am letting it burn in right now but so far I neither see nor smell smoke (and that's good, right?).
Those Samsung guys have some seriously good calculators. It is amazing that they can build stuff with...

Re: Dell E171FP saved ... almost ... well maybe
No joy, 4500uf gives me just the orange light. <sniff>
I am going to pull the last 1500uf out and wrap the legs of the 470uf@25 I had in there with another 1500uf like Jetadm123 suggested. I have some real estate on that side I could maybe eek something into. Maybe 4970uf works...
<fingers crossed>

Re: Dell E171FP saved ... almost ... well maybe
I was thinking my 3 Rubycon MBZ's are probably closer than those CapXon's ever were to being spec. I was referring to the no heat up issue on the AD board because I was thinking something should be giving off heat if it is pulling the rails down. Now I am not sure if they actually DO get pulled down or just sit idle until the power button is pushed. When the unit is in the "ON" condition, the rails come right up to 5v and 12v. I was checking them in the "OFF" state, and I kept chasing problem because...

Dell E171FP saved ... almost ... well maybe
I took in a Dell E171FP 17" the other day. Top half black screen, lower half white screen. Then no picture at all, just the 'ol orange light.
I pull it apart and visually find swollen lytic on the inverter board. Phew an easy one for a change, so I thought. I swap the cap on the inverter and check voltages. I got 7.59v on what I suspect is the 12v rail and 4.16v on the 5v rail. So I now figure something is pulling the supply down, so I disconnect the AD board (that also feeds the seperate inverter board) and the ps is now at 12v and 5v.I disconnect the inverter and try just...

Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video chip.
I ended up at a place in Miami. Oddly enough they do have an Ebay listing.
Th3_uN1Qu3: Thanks for the Quickplay info, at this point as I said I do not know if they work or not. If son decides he needs them then I'll certainly look into it. Does your program have anything to do with the Ir remote ? My son certainly seems interested in using the remote for DVD player....

Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video chip.
Everything back together, new parts installed - it now charges and will power on with adapter installed. I was so excited I did not get pics while reassembling it.
When it was all assembled I could not get the cd/dvd burner to be recognized - thought I had more hardware problems. Turns out I should have been more suspicious of Vista... applied the Microsoft Fixit and tah-dah it worky !!! << grrr, man I loath Vista >>
Boot into recovery and reinstall Vista from scratch, apply all updates and...

Re: DV6500, no, it is not the video chip.
Long overdue update here, parts have all arrived. I made an attempt to remove the damaged parts. I did manage to remove the 6679 but also removed a 10k resistor in the process. I also found a bad zener (SSM34PT). I have those in my possession now as well. I cannot get the maxim off, so I have elected to farm this one out. It is at the board shop as I write this.
More later ...
