HP G6 MB R13 battery mosfet gets hot when recharging

    Laptop : HP G6 with mb Quanta R13 .
    Processor : Intel i5

Laptop could not start and led near dc in connector was off.
Found missing +vh28 : replaced PU2 chip which generates it and PQ52 (second dc in mosfet ).
Now led near dc in connector is lit when on ac power and pc starts and stops fine. Led correctly turns orange when inserting battery with adapter showing that battery is charging.
Everything looks ok, but I found that battery mosfet PQ53 gets very hot when ac adapter and battery are used. I tried replacing PQ53 (the original one tested good after removal), 2 different adapters and 2 different batteries , but same problem.
Here are the voltages on PQ53 :
    on ac only : S = 19,5V; G = 19,5V; D = 0,6V (Q53 is cold)
    on battery only : S = 10,7V; G = 8,6V; D = 10,7V (Q53 is cold)
    AC + battery : S = 19,5V; G = 19,5V; D = 11,5V (Q53 is hot)

I don't see why Q53 gets hot during recharging : any idea or suggestion? Thanks in advance

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode, lowest scale.

Check each mosfet to see if it is defective.

    Measure the resistance across:

    Source (1-2-3) and drain (5-6-7-8)
    Source (1-2-3) and gate (4)
    Gate (4) and drain (5-6-7-8)

Repeat for each mosfet. Post the readings.

Checking for low resistance on the mosfet = defective and will need to be replaced.

Re: HP G6 MB R13 battery mosfet gets hot when recharging

I checked resistence between the 3 pins of mosfets PQ23, PQ52 and PQ53 and all readings show high resistence. Measuring in diode mode shows the internal diode as expected. I would say the 3 mosfets are ok, but I replaced them anyway and problem remains.
I found that the 20V ZVS diode PD8 protecting +VAD gets hot when battery is charging. I then checked +VAD and found that on AC only is 19,5V (ok), on battery only is 11,3V (ok), but when battery is charging +VAD raises to about 24V (?!?) as if the charging voltage somehow flows to +PWRSRC and +VAD.
This extra voltage causes PD8 to heat up discharging the extra voltage to ground and PQ53 gets hot too. I am pretty confused why this happens after replacing the battery mosfet .

This may be a stupid question but, is the battery good?

Since the battery can power the laptop, for now do not suspect the battery to be defective.

Remove all power. Meter in lowest resistance mode.

Check the resistance as per above of PQ29 and PQ30 mosfets.

I finally found the problem .
            I checked PQ29 and PQ30 : ok.
I removed battery charger chip PU9 and checked the resistors and capacitors connected to it and found that PR181, one of the two sense resistors on the charge line was 127 Ohm instead of 10 Ohm.
Replaced resistor and PU9, just in case and PC is working fine and PQ53 is cold even whit battery charging.

Probably PU9 was receiving a wrong feedback from the charging line and behaved incorrectly.

That will do it. Good job!

Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
                  by Bowline
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

Vostro 3400 (LA-K033P) won't charge battery, everything else ok
                  by techfreak9356
I bought a Vostro 3400 motherboard (LA-K033P) to upgrade over my damaged Inspiron 5593 (LA-J091P) board. Everything else is ok except for the battery. This battery I am using now is already a replacement one since I disposed of the bloated original one. Back in the Inspiron 5593 motherboard, the battery charges fine and is identified just fine. However, with the upgraded motherboard, suddenly the replacement battery is labeled as "Not a dell battery". When I borrow a similar battery from my colleague (which did not have replacements yet), it is identified and charges just fine.

Strange battery present behaviour in Lenovo Legion 5-15ARH05 mb model nm-d041
                  by ferah831208
Hello guys, i need help with this problem, I have a NM-D041 mobo, it came with low impedance in 3v linear regulator rail, the cause was a damaged EC controller ITE8227e-192. I ordered a new one and replaced it. This laptop have a different chip for keyboard management and it8227e pins for programming ITE chips are not accesible through keyboard interface, I flashed it using i2c interface pins with vertyanov programmer because laptop was dead and SPI flash didn't have power (only 3v EC) so it couldn't access firmware stored in SPI memory. I read SPI and extracted it8227 firmware from original BIOS...

Hi, so the old battery was getting error stated it's capacity is starting too get low and should be replaced, so the customer bought a new one and replaced it, but the new battery was also getting this notice that it's capacity is getting low and should be replaced, so i took the laptop for testing and the battery is charging at the terminal at 8.03V , the voltage of the battery is 7.7V, and drawing around 600mA when charger is put and the laptop is off...so that should be ok... but the bios system test doesn't recognize the battery and can't do the battery test and so is the hp battery manager,...
