Dell XPS 9560 AC Adapter Unknown

Working on a Dell XPS 9560 that had a damaged DC jack. Customer kept using it despite broken barrel on DC jack. Now after checking it with a known good charger and new jack (tested and functioning on another XPS) it still reports AC adapter unknown and will not charge the battery. Battery health is good. So question is, what on motherboard is responsible for the failure to identify AC adapter?

Thanks. FYI, there was similar thread but the OP reported as fixed with no details

The AC adapter has three wires. the third one is called ID and is for identification. measure voltage on all pins of the DC jack.

it might be possible to modify the charger .

Do you have a USBC charger 130w. If so try it to charge the battery. Use the usbc port of course.

I think your issue will be related to the charging IC. But i am not 100% sure for now.

Is this the DC jack you have?

Which kbc it uses?? You need to find AD_ID pin on kbc and check whether you have stable and correct voltage there. Trace it back for a resistor valued 33.3Ohms which is culprit in many cases for adapter identification failure.

Re: Dell XPS 9560 AC Adapter Unknown

@caspian - when plugged into motherboard with battery attached, the jack measures 19.6V on 3 red wires, 3.3V on white wire

@wheelcup - I have a 90W USB C charger. It's not enough to power the system but I'll see if it will trickle charge.

@budm - yes that's the jack I have. And as I mentioned in OP I was able to test the new jack with another XPS motherboard and can confirm both the jack and charger work fine with that alternate motherboard.

@mcplslg123 by KBC are you refering to keyboard controller? power button on this model is on the motherboard itself, not on KB if that answers your question.

              Thanks everyone.

                only red and white wire?
there is supposed to be a third color wire on the AC adapter too.

                  @caspian - black ground wires 0v

then, the AC adapter seems fine and the fault is on the mainboard.

@mgrharry, You misunderstood my point. Yes kbc=keyboard controller. I asked you to check AD_ID which tells us whether adapter is recognised by kbc or not-it has nothing to do with power button. In between your dc jack to kbc AD_ID pin there are other components and a resistor valued at 33.3Ohms. You need to check it.

hi the ad_id circuit is almost same every dell motherboard so you can trace any dell diagram to find out just search in diagram adp_id/psid/pjpdc/dc jack!!!!

Here's a snap of the KBC diagram for a similar model. I'm not great at reading schematics though and there don't seem to be board views for these models. Anyone give me a push in the right direction here?

Right direction was showed to you but perhaps you didnt do your job. Was you able to track ps id signal and 33.3 ohms resistor??

just follow the ps_id line if you want to fix this issue
find out 33.3 ohms resistor and protection fet

Schematic for 9550 can be found here on badcaps.

I replaced PQ100 and the two resistors indicated with red arrows with ones from a donor board of the same model that had liquid damage in a different area.

It now recognizes charger wattage! Yaay.... but... only sometimes. Boo. Thinking there's another fet that's bad.

                                Suggestions?

After pluggin / unplugging the charger a few times it is back to the original behavior and no longer recognizes the wattage. Maybe my PQ100 donor was bad.

Fixed. Thanks to @mcplslg123 for serving it up on a platter. I was misreading the schematic and had replaced two other resistors but once I located and replaced the 33ohm resistor off PQ100, problem solved.
