    HP 15-g092sa / LA-A996p dead

    Hi all,

Been a while since I've looked at a broken laptop.

Got a HP 15-g092SA (LA-A996P mobo with AMD A8 CPU) here for a family friend, no signs of life / no power.

No short across the DC jack, but only reading ~~0.7v plugged in so something is shorted.

Can't find a schematic or obvious reference points on the board. Any experience with these? Surface mount CPU, might hit it with some heat and see if reflowing makes a difference.

Don't mess with the CPU until you've ruled out everything else.
Especially here, if you think that something is shorted in the B+ line, you must find the shorted component, reflowing the CPU won't magically relieve the short.

First make sure that it's not a continuity problem like a broken DCIN jack. (or connector on the motherboard)
Second, check if the actual short is on the VIN or B+ line.
If you don't see any obviously burnt or bad looking component, you'll have to inject a voltage with a PSU to the shorted line (start with 1V) and find the component which is heating up.

Schematics attached, was pretty easy to find on Google…

This mobo is notorious for 3v regulator fail. So check it first.
