Must have watched those YouTube videos that suggest to use a heat gun on the high setting for several minutes .
On the other hand, at least you don't have to spend too much time looking where the problem with this laptop is (or at least you've identified one of them).

Speaking of popcorn, I did popcorn the chip on a GeForce 7900 GS. Originally it was showing artifacts. But now it works fine (though I haven't really used it at all since I reflowed it, except to test it briefly). I think I got lucky. The popcorn was in an area of a big ground plane on the chip.
