    Dell Latitude D400 Charging issues

Yes, it's another ratdude747 Latitude thread...

My old D400 has been having charging issues on one of the batteries.

What happens is the battery will charge normally... until it gets fully charged. at this point, the laptop's battery LED flashes green and orange and after 10 mins the battery gets very, very hot. Windows say's it's on AC power, not charging (as it normally would with a fully charged battery).

The laptop spent 2 months sitting in the back of my van until I dug it out for a buddy to borrow. Upon me running it last week to give him an account, it did this... first time ever. after getting it back, it still does it.

The battery was bought as NOS on ebay a little over 2 years ago IIRC. It's a genuine Dell 9T119, with sanyo cells IIRC.

The stock battery, a more worn 9T119, doesn't do it... I'm charging it right now to see if it does it too.

I know this can't be good for the battery... I'd rather it not go and burn the house down.

I'm guessing it's a battery controller issue... but anybody have a clue what's going on here? And if so, what are my options to fix it?

Confirmed that the issue is only with one of the two batteries.

Then the problem is with the battery in question. Junk it before it catches on fire.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

That's what I was leaning towards. Damn, that was the decent battery too, no more than 15% wear (the other one is a 60% worn POS). If had a battery welder and a chip flasher I'd almost be tempted to merge them into a single battery (good cells put with good controller)...

I'm having bad luck with laptops this week. Between this, my Dv6800's reflow failing, and my D600 prospect laptop being semi-flakey, I seem to have lost my touch...

If it's doing it to both batteries, then yes. It probably is a faulty motherboard.

Great, it's already on mainboard #2.

Looks like i may move it's parts to my D600 I bought a week ago. The HDD and RAM, that is.
