    Burnt component

I have a burnt capacitor which caused damage to the circuit board . Any guidelines for repair ? Should I also search for other problems elsewhere ?

The photos aren't clear so I'll post some others later

    Re: Burnt component

If the burned capacitor was of the ceramic or tantalum type, they are well known for randomly going short-circuit over time and causing these issues.
Looks like only the top layer of the board has burned so it may be repairable. Just replace the burned cap and make sure to clean all of the carbonized matter on the PCB and all should be well. If the cap was ceramic, just find one on a dead board that has the same size. If the cap was tantalum, try powering on that circuit and measure the voltage. The voltage rating of the new tantalum cap has to be higher than that present on the board - if not you'll get another burned cap in that spot. Ceramic caps are usually rated for 32V or higher so they don't have this issue and they are bi-polar.

It was a ceramic type . I scraped off the burnt matter and soldered a new one . Before that the laptop would turn on , fan worked . Now it's completely dead . I measured the capacitor I soldered and seems ok .

I think there is grounded on second layer, you must clean it and make sure not shorted to 2nd layer

Need help to replace burned resistor in 350w atx psu
          by mikey5791
          Hi to all forum members,

Got this faulty 350 watt atx psu dirt cheap from a local online seller as i am keen to use it as a learning tool to repair faulty power supply.
The faulty part is quite obvious from the burn area near the 16pin KA7500 BD pwm. The fuse is still intact with good continuity.

Upon power on ac, there is 5vdc standby power on cathode of diode D14 and about 10vdc on cathode of diode D13.(This should be the aux power to generate the 12v and 5v rail.)
Initially i replace the two burned resistors near my marked red arrow to 200 ohm resistor...

Is it possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue meter?
          by chth96
I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that

"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."

Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...

Vizio D55un-E1 burnt ceramic capacitor identification
          by ITF
Hey, I'm extremely new to TV repair. Long story short, TV popped when I turned it on, opened it up, located the burnt ceramic capacitor, but the label with the info on it was burnt out. I don't know much about this stuff, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on the capacitor I would need so I could solder in the new one. The nearby capacitors have the labels on them, but they vary. The power supply board part # is: PLTVHU401XABV The board location number of the capacitor is C9100 and it is almost dead center on the board....

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

Securing a good thermal interface between...

Zotac GTX 260 burnt component - can anyone identify?
          by dicky96
          Hi guys
This Zotac GTX 260 had a high side MOFET on one Vcore VRM phase short circuit Drain to Gate (Not short Drain to Source)

This has burnt out the drive IC L3E (ADP3110A) and also an SOT-23 device very close to the driver IC. According to the PCB markings 'Dxxx' this is likely to be a diode.

Basically the VRM has 4 phases, two powered from one 6 way connector and two powered from the other 6 way

I would assume each pair of phases are basically identical, the burnt out phase has SOT-23 devices WW1 plus the burnt one.

          The good phase...
