    Via P4PB400-FL Bad caps

I Heard about the capacitor problem about two years ago so once a month I would pull the side and check my board.

Last month it was fine this month yesterday it's not the top of the 7 large caps around the processor are swelling with a little leakage this is on a mission critical machine so I may try to replace the caps some weekend soon.

The caps look like 10mm but I can't see the numbers without pulling the board and I can't do that right now.

Anyone know what the number is for the 7 large caps around the processor on the VIA P4PB400-FL board.

    Thanks

    what brand are the caps?

i see the board here but not possible to read the caps
    http://accelenation.com/?ac.id.184.1

are all the caps the same brand. there is quite a few. If they are all a crappy brand i would normally recommend to replace all 1000uf and above. because it is a misson critical system i absolutely insist on that.

looks like you have 11 major values and 19 or more probably 1000s. better to open the case and check with a magnifying glass and torch at least.

Yep I will have to get a magnifying glass to know for sure. But from the color and marking I first thought "rubycon"
But I will take a closer look in a few days.

They all look to be the same brand but will post if they are for sure in a day or two.

      Thanks

        they are GSC brand....crap

        http://www.computerbase.de/bild/article/125/20/

11 major and 24 probably 1000s. a hell of a lot of caps. you would really have to love that board to do all that work. i would probably look for an intel D875PBZLK on ebay. anyway nice project, with all good caps it will run as the designers intended.

nice to see that GSC are being consistent on p4 age of boards

          Re: Via P4PB400-FL Bad caps

          Hi,

I have one VIA P4PB-400 and one VIA P4PB-Ultra.

The 400 has bad caps and was locking up. I replaced it with the Ultra, it was a spare with very few hours on it. I'm sure it will eventually fail too. It has the same GSC caps in it.

My count of the caps is this:

          6.3V
          8mmx12mm 1000uF 21 pcs
          10 x 25 2200uF 7 pcs

          10V
          8 x 14 1000uF 5 pcs

          16V
          10 x 20 1000uF 4 pcs

At $1.10 each, that's $40.70 (plus shipping) for each board.

I just bid on a 875PBZLK for $47.50. I actually have two PCs with the 875PBZ (no LK) and they are good boards. The only problem is if I change boards, I'll have to buy a new copy of WinXP, at around $150 recapping suddenly makes sense.

What do you think, are the caps I need available from Top Cat. I looked around on the net and didn't find everything I would need. I would only recap one board (Ultra), unless two would somehow be cheaper.

I'm in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) area.

I've looked in the local business yellow pages, there are one or two places I could try. I thought that a local source may have some of the harder to get caps.

Other than that, I checked the USA places recommended in the "where to buy caps" thread.

              Thanks for any help,

              Paul
