AMD R9 270 -- dead after power supply short

I have an R9. the problem is not unknown. I know clearly what happened. I was working on a home made fan I took from a server and one the PSU molex wires were exposed and grounded to the case or the 5v+12v touched and grounded. There was small spark and poof and the system shut down.

The card never turned on after that. No burns its like new.

Interestingly the power led's work, green when PCI is on and red when is off so its getting some power. However the card doesn't display anything and takes about 3 tries to power on to get the fans on, but never turns on display or detects as a slave when using multiple cards.

So no burn but no display / detect either.

My first guess was that the card is ok only the ROM got corrupt. But i'm not sure if this is even possible since I don't know video card architecture much.

I'm familiar with board level repair, did many power supplies since they're easy but not much experience with video cards and looking for a starting point.

Sounds like a damaged cap or SMD component...

I think it will be a mosfet. I'll update the thread with pictures and info as I figure it out but I'm looking for somewhere to start with a voltmeter. I don't want to start by de soldering parts because the R9 looks so fragile and hard to get to. Some of this stuff I'm just going to have to burn off and replace even if it was good or bad. I don't know or have anything to test capacitors in circuit. I do have a cheap cap tester that works ok on power supply type caps.

Measure the resistance from the chokes to ground.

I doubt the short-circuit caused the ROM on the video card to go bad.

My best guesses about what might have happened, without more details, are as follows:
            a) If PSU is from a crappy manufacturer, then the short-circuit could have cause the other output rails from the PSU to temporarily go crazy (possibly too low or too high or huge ripple/noise), thus killing a sensitive IC on the video card.
            b) The video card had developed bad BGA on the GPU chio. Once that PSU shorted and the card turned off and cooled, the bad BGA made the GPU not work any more.

If it's case b) above, then a reflow is all that may be needed to bring the video card back to life.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

              Russound CA4 Power Supply Repair
              by CMCM
              Hello Everybody,

Trying to repair a power supply from a Russound CA4 Multizone Controller (picture attached)

Russound no longer supports it but were kind enough to provide a schematic of the power supply (pdf attached).

The outputs marked 12v and 20v are all measuring only 1v.

The board is clicking, which I think means it is in something called hiccup mode when the flyback transformers switches because of an internal problem or something else on the board Overloading it.

The capacitors physically look clean (no bludgesor leaks) and...

Mitsubishi CNC switching power supply board dead / relay board bad diode failure
              by sam_sam_sam
I was working on this CNC machine today found no keyboard functioning no control relay powering on
The screen powered on and was giving an operation error but the manual was not very clear about what the error exactly was but with a little bit of troubleshooting and finding out that the control relays not powering on and no keyboard functions we narrowed down to this one switching power supply which of course does not have any indicator LED light they are on the keyboard interface/relay controller board

Found shorted diodes on main controller relays there are 3 of them that...
