    Possibly shorted FETS GA-MA770T-ES3

Hi all, I got a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-ES3 AM3 board that I suspect has 2 shorted FETS as it become super hot to touch as soon as the PSU is switched on. I was unable to switch on the board, I am guessing the board has detected a short and don't allow me to turn on. But I was able to measure voltage on both of the suspected shorted MOSFETS:
    1) Highlighted in red, I was getting 4.9V (K3918)
    2) Highlighted in yellow, I was getting 0.4V (Nikos L1085DG)

There was a Nichicon HM(M) 6.3V 1000uf next to the MOSFETS, highlighted in orange. When I was doing troubleshooting, I got no resistant on the leads of the caps, therefore I suspected it was the caps that had gone shorted, then I removed the caps for further testing. The cap was totally gone, although when testing out of circuit, there was resistant, but when I test it again using capacitance function, I am getting OL. After removing the cap, the MOSFETS still heatup as before.

What your opinion guys ? Should I replace those MOSFETS ?
    Thanks in advance

Alright I figured out what wrong with the board, therefore prob is fixed.

The LAN chip been shorted before the board was passed to me, as always I will touch the LAN chip whenever I sees a board that don't turn on / POST, this is because in my country there are still many people using phone line DSL internet, and always thunderstorm would fry the LAN chip. I did touch the LAN chip, but it is just a very very faint warm, therefore I tought it was normal. Until I replace the suspected shorted Nikos FETs with another Nikos N channel FETs. Now when connect the board to the PSU, now the LAN chip heat up real fast, I can't touch it for more than 1 sec. Immediately shut off the PSU and disolder the shorted LAN chip.

So the conclusion was, the shorted LAN chip took the Nikos FETs and the Nichicon cap with it. Now I am able to turn on the board and passed memtest.

      Good save!
Would not have thought the LAN chip could burn those rather large MOSFETs. I guess we learn something new every day. Thanks for your post.

The L1085DG is actually a voltage regulator.

        Where did you measure voltage?

          You're right!
Anything with 1085 or 1086 in the part number is more than likely a voltage regulator.

            Panasonic TC-P50S1 shorted TXNSC1EDUU (TNPA4782AB) SC Board
            by Yanleb
Hi every one. I just want to share the successful repair of my shorted Panasonic TNPA4782AB SC board.

I don't usually do it but so many parts were shorted that I decided to buy the ShopJimmy repair kit instead of sourcing each components individually. Here is the list of components the kit contained, with a remark indicating if I needed that part or not :

            D608, good
            D618 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
            D619 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
            D865 RF101L4S, shorted (See warning 1 below)

            HP Victus 15-FA1025NL , board DAG3PAMB8D0 REV:D, shorted CPU DrMOS and n-mos
            by modtool
            Hi to all,
the owner of this machine gave it to me after having opened it to take off the dust from the inside, telling me that after that it didn't start anymore.
I found that one of the DrMOS (AOZ5016QI) on the CPUCORE was shorted between VIN and VSWH, and that one of the two n-mos connected to the power jack was shorted aswell.
I unsoldered the two shorted components and verified that there were no other short circuits, then decided to power the mainboard, firstly with the lab power supply, then with its original HP 200w charger, but the behaviour is the same, the board starts...

            ThinkPad T490 20N2000CSC NM-B901 no signs of life - short on 5V SMPS, ThinkEngine-3 hot - *speculations*
            by feliks912
            Attached schematic 🙂.

Laptop gives no signs of life. No fan and no CPU heat.

Think Engine BD4179MWV is hot on plugging in *AND* pressing the power button.

Discovered short to ground on VCC5M power delivery IC NB690GRP (5 volt line, not the high current VCC5M_PD) which is one of the ways that chip is powered. I'm puzzled.

Nothing else is warm on the board. CPU resistances are OK, 9V VSYS line is present from the BMIC. All misc and cables are disconnected.

What do you guys think happened? I've got two theories:

Dead Razer Blade 14 2022, shorted CPU?
            by BalkanBoy
            Hi,

            today I got Razer Blade 14, Ryzen 9 6900HX and RTX 3070Ti.

Laptop was completely dead. I found shorted CPU VRM mosfet, shorted 19V mosfet and blown battery fuse.

I replaced it all, but still on CPU coil where mosfet was shorted I got very low resistance, near 0 ohms. On other CPU coils I got around 3 ohms.

Laptop now raises voltage on whole board, but still nothing comes on the screen. CPU gets 0.7V on all coils except the shorted one. CPU gets only slightly hot, below 40 C.

I removed coil and injected 0.7V, it draw around...

Asus G634j Rog Strix SCAR Power rail shorted nothing hot on thermal camera.
            by abajor
I haven't been able to find a schematic or board view for one of these out in the wild. I had one come in with a no charge/no boot issue.

It Uses two pairs of Source to Source Mosfets after the power jack to prevent back flow from battery or PSU after the power jack.

The drain on the board feed side of the Mosfets measures a near dead short to ground. I attempted a voltage injection there it draws about 1.4A at 1V absolutely nothing heats up on the thermal camera.
It draws 1.86A injecting directly to ground.

Is this just the way it is when these ultra...
