ABit KG7 Memtest Bugs Fixed by Recap

I just finished recapping a KG7 with the usual bulging/leaking Nichicon 3300uF in the VRM. I replaced all 1500 and 3300uF caps with Rubycon MCZ. As an experiment, all TEAPO 1000 and smaller were not replaced.

The interesting part was this board no longer fails Memtest86 with the usual Athlon test failures. It runs all the way through without error. I run the Driving slew rate=7, as I do with all KG7 boards. This is the only deviation from stock clocking.

It will be interesting to see if recapping has also affected the need for the fast slew rate.

I went back and tried it with non-ECC memory, and it fails the usual Athlon tests.

I guess the only memory that Memtest86 likes in this board is ECC.

    Sorry for the false hope...

Not claiming that the 1000uF caps are at fault, but I've seen these bulge and fail.
I would include 1000uF caps as a value to replace.
I believe a good number of these are used around memory slots and AGP/PCI slots.

Normally I replace everything from 470uF and up. Got lazy on this board to see what happens. I have several KG7 that require recapping, all have the same 3300uF VRM cap failures.

All the memory caps are 1500uF, and were replaced. As noted above, the 1000uF are AGP/PCI located.

I use Memtest86 v3.3 on bootable CD. I have not tried the "plus" version.

Adding to this thread, I have a different KG7 board under test as of this writing. The board fails on Test #6 of both Memtest86 and Memtest86+.

I don't remember test 6 being a problem. The docs for the old Memtest86 note tests #5, 8 being problems.

How many memory modules are you using? If I'm not mistaken, the AMD761 doesn't officially support more than 4 banks of unbuffered memory, yet the ABit board can hold 8 of them (4 dimms).

I must be dyslexic... the failing test is #5. I recapped another KG7 today, and it fails the same as the other two, test #5.

Memory is Micron 256 DDR as one stick, DIMM #4 closest to IDE connectors. Book says install #4 first, 3 next, etc.

I tried to download the source for Memtest86+, but the .TZ file is corrupt. Request sent to the board owner..

Recap motherboards :: Abit KG7-LITE and Soltek SL-75FRN2-L

                  Hi all

Hope this is in the correct place.

I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid .

Pictures of the boards are attached.

                  ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap
                  by momaka
Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                  Abit NF7-S v2 Recap - Not posting
                  by tomalamix
                  Hy everyone,

New around here but I've been reading a lot from several threads around here.

I have between hands an old Abit mobo, the NF7-S v2. It was working until a few years ago, but then started to start-up only sometimes and now doesnt start up at all.

The red light comes on with the PSU connected and the green light comes on too when i turn it on but no joy, it doesnt POST, no beeps, just the green led comes ON.

I've tried changing 5 capacitors so far, 5x Rubycoon 6.3V 3300uF that are around the CPU, no joy, same thing, no POST and green...

no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler
                  by momaka
I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

Vizio M65Q7-H1 Red Vertical Strips fixed by tape blocking LC1 signal to half of the panel
                  by howardc64
                  Failure Symptom

No picture, just red vertical stripes. Google search shows quite common problem for these recent Vizio M series although red vertical stripe pattern may differ. Some call it "Netflix" boot screen haha.

                  Where is the short?

Panel has 4x buffer boards. Quickly found the 1/4 panel buffer board with the problem by selectively disconnecting buffer board flex cables.

Having recently fixed another Vizio with similar symptoms that was a shorted ESD diode array ( link ) Probed the ESD diode array but...
