Chipped mosfet on P8Z77-V

Hi all,

Long time no see

I have a question regarding a mosfet I received on an open box P8Z77-V. The surface is chipped on the top. Could this cause trouble to the motherboard?

No, I don't think so. Is gate shorted to source?

If you need to desolder it and replace it, I can offer a tip: use a 60w+ iron. Better yet, use two irons. I ripped off pads trying to take one off with a lesser wattage iron after my 60W bit the bucket, and now the motherboard is finished.

If you think it won't cause issues I will certainly give it a shot. I just want to make sure it won't damage the motherboard.

I would say just check the MOSFET first. If no short between the terminals, it should be fine. Usually the die of the MOSFET is much smaller and the chipped corner you see is only part of the case and won't affect the operation of the MOSFET... unless the MOSFET was hit so hard that the Gate terminal became disconnected. Either way, fire it up, and you will see. If the MOSFET is open, the motherboard either won't power up or if this MOSFET is used to control power for a certain device, then you won't get that device working. Unlikely you'll damage the motherboard, though.

Also, since this was an open-box item and you saw that MOSFET chipped, visually inspect everything else on the motherboard too. Particularly, check the CPU socket for bent pins and look for any chipped capacitors, resistors, and cut traces.

I did send pictures over to Amazon. It has a damaged ram slot and a scratched trace, not past the protective layer luckily. The damaged RAM slot pins are good still so it may work, if not then it will be a 2 slot mobo I guess. The CPU pins are fine and everything else seems to be in good shape. Amazon did refund me 50% of my money because of the issues so I got the board for $46.00. If it turns out to be fully functional then it's a win for me.


I wouldn't recommend open box boards from Amazon at all. I ordered 3 and the first one was missing an IO shield and had arctic silver 5 all mashed in the pins, plus 1 pin completely missing. The 2nd one had bent pins and broken traces on the back side... and now this 3rd one ^.

Glad to help.

Just make sure the pins in the damaged RAM slot are not touching or shorting to anything else. Otherwise, you may end up with more problems.

it should be fine... i once got given a old foxonn board that had a few chiiped mosfets im not sure how they got chipped though. i alsodropped a screwdriver in the case accidently and it chipped the edge of a small chip but it still worked good for about 3 years then i threw the computer away ecause it was outdated
