    is cap size important

I know that in a lot of cases you can't go over a given size for caps because they won't fit in the space, but does a slightly smaller height matter?

I am mostly using Panasonic caps now. The last monitor I opened up has caps (470uF 25V) that are about 10 dia x 18L, and the Panasonic ones I have are about 2mm shorter. Will this have any adverse affect or should I try to find another brand with identical dimensions?

I am wondering if one or more have been replaced at some point as there are 5 caps with the same stats, and 3 different lengths. (a blue one with the same specs is about 17L)

It would help if you told us what make and series you were replacing and where - power supply? Ideally you should check the esr and ripple on the
datasheets for the caps you are replacing and match or better them.
Chances are if you are using Panasonic FR FM or FC they will be better than
what is in even if 2mm shorter.

      Re: is cap size important

My apologies I thought it was a generic type question, I will add the requested info ASAP.

Ok 2 of them look like Ltec LXY, there is also a PET marking.

2 others have no manufacturer shown, they are brown and have a KZE shown, and one shows ON and the other OG.

The last one is blue, looks like Ltec as well and has LZG and the PET marking.

They are for the power supply board in a Viewsonic VX1940w LCD monitor. If necessary I can try to find a camera to upload pics.

The Panasonics I use are FR FM or FC's. (in this case the ones I have are FM and FC, I have both so could use either)

Cap size (physical dimensions) does not matter as long as it fits.

Original Ltec caps that could be identified

                LZG impedance 0.060
                LXY impedance 0.038

                replacement Panasonic

                FM impedance 0.026
                FC impedance 0.068

So are the FC caps close enough to use or would the low impedance FM's be better? I would like to use all the same ones if possible. I'm not sure how much difference would be acceptable to replace something with.

                      Anyone?

How close is "close"? As close as possible or as long as it is within a certain range of the original?

For the purpose of this repair I would just use Panasonic FM for all if that is what you have.

                            Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

                            Hi everyone
I noticed on the Xgpro software the BIOS backup files have extra bytes at the end when reading some chips, this is because the Xgpro software also reads the OTP region of those flash chips, and by default will append that region to the saved file
                            Programmer models: XGecu TL866II Plus / T48 / T56 / T76

Example: GD25LQ128D (1.8V), IC size is listed as 0x1000000 Bytes (16777216 bytes) + 0xC00 bytes, those extra 0xC00 bytes will be appended to the end of the saved file by default, resulting in a file size of 16780288 bytes
There's also an extra OTP Secu.R...

                            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                            ...

                            by Paxman_Swede
                            Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

                            Gigabyte GA-6OXT :: caps question
                            by Foetuss
                            Good evening

I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
