Re: Acer AL2017
Is there a way to test those?
Yes it is strange, it never made the noise before the caps went bad and my wife's doesn't whine at all. (I replaced all of her caps while I had it apart to swap the boards to test mine)...

Re: Acer AL2017
Played a bit more, at 94% brightness it buzzes, 95% and higher it stops. Drop back down to 94% and the buzz starts again.

Re: Acer AL2017
Ok I just tried the brightness, it seems to get slightly louder as the brightness gets higher, then as I keep going higher the sound kind of "warbles" and when it reaches 100% brightness the buzzing stops. When I start to lower the brightness the buzzing starts again.
I have not noticed any smell at all.

Re: Acer AL2017
Finally found one to swap it out for but it didn't make any difference.

Re: Acer AL2017
The big CapXon only has an ESR of .49 so would that mean it has not dried out? It seems to be in the same range as the large caps in other boards I have out right now. Or can the ESR be normal but the cap still have excess ripple?

Re: Acer AL2017
No I haven't tried that. Will give it a try right now.
Just swapped them and it sounds like the buzz is coming from the same spot, the lower transformer. I also noticed a buzzing in the upper left of the monitor where the wires lead to the lamps. Could the transformer issue be causing the lamps to buzz? I did switch the power board with another one for testing and there was no buzzing....Last edited by Undead; 12-20-2012, 03:14 PM.

Re: Acer AL2017
I think I am seeing something not quite right with U202 (just the appearance in the lower left corner of it that I can see in the new pic). How can I test it?
The markings on those chips are:
P605
BD6F2Y
I have also re-soldered all of the connections on the whining transformer. No change.

Re: Acer AL2017
Wow almost 3 months with no other suggestions? I seem to be having a string of bad luck where nobody is familiar with any of the problems I'm seeing lol
adding 3 better quality pics just in case someone has an epiphany and needs a better look...

Re: Acer side glow
I am quite surprised that nobody knows if either of these issues can be fixed or if they are just problems that some monitors are just plagued with from day one. In all seriousness, the experts here seem to be the most knowledgeable I have seen in any forums and if you guys don't have an answer then there must not be one.
I decided to just garbage them both as unfixable, since the glow and the blurriness are extremely annoying, and will move on to a new project.
My sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to read my questions even...

Acer side glow
I have an Acer AL1916W monitor that has an annoying glow around the edges. I think it's visible in the attached picture.
I have seen this problem on more than one monitor to varying degrees, Is there anything that can be done about it or is it just something that some monitors do? I have even had 3 identical monitors where only one will have it but not the other two.
Also, is there anything that can be changed or checked if the text on the screen is a bit blurry? My wife and I had the exact same monitors and mine was crystal clear but the text on hers was a little...

Re: help finding a supplier with a specific lamp
I went with this one from Mouser since I had to place a cap order there and I didn't want to pay $8 for shipping for one 50 cent lamp :-/
http://ca.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=2162virtualkey56040000virtualkey560-2162
This is a 14V .1A so it was about the closest to the original lamp. It's supposedly rated for 50,000 hours, so I'll hope that I don't have to do this again anytime soon. I did buy a couple extra lamps though, just in case.
The one problem with it was it...

Re: help finding a supplier with a specific lamp
Well it sure does last. Have had it forever and the lamp is the only problem I have had with it. Looks like Panasonic caps in it.
If I recall someone replaced a lamp for me years ago, so still 2 lamps in all those years, probably 25 years, yeah I would say the lamps last pretty longLast edited by Undead; 11-29-2012, 06:14 PM.

Re: help finding a supplier with a specific lamp
Thank you very much for the links. At this point even a dim light would be better than nothing. At least I'll be able to tell if the thing is turned on or not

Re: help finding a supplier with a specific lamp
No neither of those. Here is a pic. My apologies for not providing a pic to start with, I hoped the part number and stats would have been enough since the receiver was still plugged into everything...

help finding a supplier with a specific lamp
Does anyone know of a good supplier for lamps for an old stereo?
I have an old Yamaha RX-360 receiver and the lamp is burned out. I have so far been unsuccessful in finding a replacement. I have tried Newark/element14 and Mouser but so far have not found it on their sites. Or ebay either.
I did find a service manual and it looks like the part number is:
VN160300
14.5V
115mA

Re: fuse question
Well I'm hoping that it won't repeatedly blow. I just got the monitor (was turned in for recycling) and after replacing the caps since there were bad ones, it was still dead. I checked the fuse and it was bad so I figure it won't hurt to get a few extras "just in case" since I have to place an order anyway.

Re: fuse question
Yes there is definitely a T before the 4A. Had to remove it to read it.
Ok so I will order several of the slow-blow ceramic 4A 250V fuses.
Thank you both for the help

Re: fuse question
Yes it does say to use only the same type and rating of fuse but doesn't say what type it is (that I can see anyway).
The monitor is an Acer X193W.
The info right above the fuse (not visible in the picture) says
4A/250V and it's identified as F301....

fuse question
When replacing fuses in monitor power supplies, should you use the slow-blow kind or the normal kind?
