Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

Looks like the cap has been reversed, all the other caps have their negative facing the other direction...?

I get so paranoid about doing that I check 3 times before soldering

Thankfully, it's an easy fix trodas eh?

I check it once before soldering and once after - using a multimeter to confirm that the negative lead of all caps is connected to GND (this might not be always true as there can be a cap on -5V or -12V rail).

looking at your pics of the original teapos on the board, that cap is indeed incorrectly installed reversed

Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

Okay, guys. You all figured it out My bad. I can't understand how I can did THAT mistake, but I did it.

Well, at least we all see what Pannyes are made off - a thick yellow stuff inside

And of course I fixed it and computer is stable again, heeh. Easy stuff. Next time I won't be so careless and check and re-check more

            Poor cap

But OTOH - if I desoldered it first, no-one could notice my mistake and I could claim that I was the unlucky and get one bad piece of Pannyes
And I do believe it could happen for any brand at all. We seen even Rubbyes, Chemi-cons, Nichicons and Pannyes blow out - now just let's wrongly polarize Samxon to see what it is made off inside

Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

Todays I replaced (for playing safe) all the rest of small caps - damn Teapos, so, they gotta go

Frankly, there is unbeliable amount of them - 20 pieces of the small ones. 7 are 22uF, and 13 are 10uF ones. Two of the 22uF ones I replaced with 33uF Panny FM 35V ones, as they are on filtering for the fan's, so... For rest five 22uF I used Panny FM 50V ones. The 10uF ones I fitted with Panny FC 25V ones, but only two - in two cases, where I can't solder from back of the PCB a SMD 1206 ceramic 10uF cap because the conductible hole(s) are so near...

It does not give me more OC - however maybe the other that 3:3:1 divider now work's, I don't know. I just tried 126Mhz FSB (1764Mhz, whoooa but it crashed on BSOD in Win, so, back to long time proven stable 120Mhz. This board probably can't give me on 3:3:1 more entierly stable and no other divider does work - or worked, I was too pissed from the Eurocase PSU weird results, that I did not tried the OC really hard, if at least 122Mhz won't work for me...
(for the record, I was encounter ocassional crashes at 122Mhz, so I get back to 120 for stability, also 1.625V it seems is need, but that could be attributed to the reversed cap too, so maybe I should give 1.600 try again...)

That bring the caplist used to this:

              Abit ST6R
              ---------
              10x 2200uF 6.3V r10 - P12344-ND
              7x 1500uF 6.3V r8 - Samxon GC
              7x 120uF 16V r6 - P12922-ND
              2x 33uF 35V - P12925-ND
              5x 22uF 50V - P12927-ND
              2x 10uF 16V PannyFC - P11212-ND
              11x 10uF 16V SMD 1206 - 490-3911-1-ND

Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

Was it really worth replacing caps of 120uF and below? Most members state that these are not necessary to replace.

Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

Well, at least he knows it'll last this way. The small ones do go occasionally, it's just harder to tell.

My neighbor's Abit (couldn't get the model) is still fine.

It's a VH6T. Of course, now it's dead. Biggest recapping incentive yet, cause he thinks there's something worse wrong with it = free Celery 1.1...
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.

Re: Abit ST6-R full of Teapos caps

davmax - just to say, these was originaly 100uF ones, yet I recapped them with 120uF ones.
And the small ones given me troubles on Abit KD7-G, so I won't leave ANY small cap - especially not from brands like Teapos (presented in past on my Abit ST6-R) or Hec ones - you seen what they can do, did you?

Shroomie - congratulations on getting free board with CPU - just worth the repair cost of caps

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                      Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps

                      Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                      ...

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                      by Paxman_Swede
                      Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps
                      by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

                      Gigabyte GA-6OXT :: caps question
                      by Foetuss
                      Good evening

I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
