    Latest Epox Mother boards

I have been using Epox boards for some time now. It is obvious they madea big mistake with caps. However their board layouts particularly in the VRM area are good and they perform well.

Looking at their latest product offerings I noticed something odd. All Intel chip set boards use solid polymer caps around VRM. For AMD boards they still use wet electros that look very like Teapo. Why is this I wonder?

    Re: Latest Epox Mother boards

I haven't looked at buying any Epox boards in a while now.. I've got no less than 4 of them in my "recap" pile, that still work, but of course have leaky GSC caps. Funny the Teapo caps on these boards actually seem to still be good. I've got another 8RDA3+ on the way that i'm going to see if i can fix.

As for why they would use solid polymer on the Intel boards, and standard low ESR electrolytics on the AMD boards, perhaps the fact that the AMD chips are less demanding on Vcore than the Intel ones?? I mean if you're talking AMD64 (either 754 or 939) versus the Prescott in either 478 or 775 pin format, the Prescott is much more of a scorcher than AMD64 chips are, and much more demanding of the Vcore VRM. My overclocked Athlon 64, even with 1.5Vcore, finds it rather hard to get the core temp over 50 C, and 50C is more like idle temp for the faster prescotts.

Like i said in the other thread, the Sanyo Oscon's have more current available at typical operating temps. Presumably this would extend to other polymer caps, such as the yellow Fujitsu's, or any other manufacturer that makes polymer caps.

Intel processors usually are less demanding with the Vcore. Intel processors usually have a lower Vcore than AMD, AFAIK.

Lower Vcore and higher active power consumption translates to much higher Icore. The ripple is also higher, put far higher stresses on VRM output capacitors than on AMD boards. So they're more demanding on VRM design, as the OP stated.

But the thing is, at message boards, people are able to OC Intels farther than AMDs at the same Vcore! Has anyone noticed that?

remember AMD's aren't clocked as high as intels, ie. an athlon 64 3000+ runs at 1.8ghz and is the equivalent of a P4 3ghz.

So u will see more performance gain from a 400mhz overclock on a amd than a 400mhz overclock on a P4.

Have been seeing many 600 Mhz and a bit higher OCs with Intel being posted.

                Re: Latest Epox Mother boards

I've seen the Epox boards with chemicon/sanyo in the VRM... I also noticed that only the high end AMD boards use digital VRM's...

Even my biostar has OST, but not in the VRM, they are low uF ~ 35V type. Sanyo/Chemicon in the VRM

This is what I have for an A64 mainboard... hopefully will be built soon.
