    Recap a MS-6540 with Poly?

    Hey Guys!
    I have an old MSI MS-6540. I have 4 capacitors busted. What I see on them are: 1500uf 16v, 105c H0427, HM(M) size is 10mm x 20mm

    All other capacitors look normal. Should I replace with the exact same type or should I go with Poly? If Poly, is preferred, is there a certain one to go with? What do they run price wise and where do I get it?

      These old ones sound like Nichicon? If yes, that batch of caps are known to be problematic.

      You can use Rubycon MCZ sold here at badcaps.net (assuming the diameter and height fit).

          That was Quick! Is there a solid version of this or should I just leave it like it is? Its a High performance system even though its an old P4
          P4 Extreme 3.4ghz
          4gb RAM

              16V caps? that's on the CPU VRM input side (basically directly after the 4pin 12V plug)
              no real benefit putting polys there. on the VRM output side though, those would be an upgrade (if it doesn't have polys or high-end lytics there already..)

                          You could do Rubycons, Nichicon HNs, HMs, Panasonic FMs (Maybe)...among others.

                          I think that was a bad batch of Nichicons from back in the day. Doesn't really happen anymore. Nichicon is solid. My favorite cap brand.

                                  One tip I'd like to mention is double check you've installed the capacitor is the correct polarity BEFORE soldering it in position

                                      I've got a bunch of Poly VVX-250 VOIP phones that work fine as kind as long as they are plugged into the wall wart. Recently I got around to install a couple of TP-Link 5 port POE switches that are added to the existing plain Jane 24 port unmanaged switch. Great!!! Finally I am able to ditch the wall warts from these phones making more space on the desk, plus I am gaining some badly needed power outlets. So I thought.

                                      Plugged in the first VVX-250 into the POE switch, booted up no problem. Plugged in the other Poly phones and they start to boot anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds,...

                                      Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
                                      This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

                                      So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                                      I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

                                      This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

                                      Got 4 CCFL 16/10 monitors for free.

                                      The resolution is almost Full HD (1680x1050)

                                      VGA Input only is a bummer though.

                                      Uses cheap TN panel with terrible viewing angles.

                                      Even though this is not 17" 5:4 screen, still has very low resell value here. Can be found for 15-20 euros.

                                      All the 4 monitors were not working and needed psu recap. Used mix of mediocre / junk caps to recap them, then donated 3 of them to friends/relatives and kept 1 for myself. Also like to install extra caps on empty spaces to help them last longer.

                                      The more time passes, the more nostalgic I get with old hardware. Video cards and motherboards tend to be my weak spot. As such, I often scavenge eBay for old PC hardware, especially anything with bad caps or in need of similar minor repair.

                                      For today's consideration, I have a popular low-end card from back in the early 2000's: an nVidia GeForce FX5200. This one is the BFG Tech. Asylum take on the card, with 256 MB of DDR RAM running at 400 MHz and 128-bit bus (vs. 64-128 MB and 64-bit bus on many of the cheaper versions.)
