    Netgear WGR614 v4 Router

Hi guys first post here on badcaps.

Anyways here is a Netgear WGR614 v4 Router with el cheapo Teapo caps (hehe it rhymes).

BTW the heatsinks were installed by me to cool the VRM's and the controller chips.

I have already read most of the forum FAQ's and sticky threads but I still have a newbie question. The specs for the Teapo caps are here (PDF file) and state that they are Low ESR/High frequency caps. While searching through digikey for new caps it gives me the option to select different types of caps. My question is: should I select Low ESR for the type of caps I am loking for? I assume so since the Teapos are Low ESR. If anyone is interested the badcaps in question are Teapo SC series, 105C, 470uf, 25v, radial and are 10X12mm.

    use panasonic fm or fc.
i have used both with good results here.
the heat from the vrm kills the teapo's.no returns with the panasonic caps after many months and nearly 100 of these units.

I lookeded up the specs for the Panasonic FC/FM series but unfortunately their 470uF 25v caps are too tall for the limited space inside the router; vertical space inside the router is ~14mm. However I did find some United Chemi-Con KMG's that are not too tall, would those be ok?

KMG is a GP series, not a low impedance series. From UCC (and Digi-Key), use LXZ, KY, or KZE; from Nichicon, use PW or HE.

Thanks for the heads up PeteS. The KMG would be perfect as it is only 12.5mm tall but wont be suitable as you are telling me. I originally looked at the LXZ/KZE/KY series but I immediately noticed that they were 16mm tall. I guess I'll have to get a little bit creative and mount them at a 90 degree angle.

i know a 10x10-12.5 size is availible in fc.maybe fm too.
i use a bunch of em.i can post the digikey number later.

Well I guess I better check my Netgear then... been having to pull the power on it every once in a while to restor my connection...

{MD shakes fist at cheap ass bean counters and their cheap ass usage of poor quality components...

why you buy cheap ass router then could have bought a cisco with nichicons........anyway you can sink the hottest chips and even fit a fan inside. i have seen some mods where they dremel a hole in the top and fit an 80mm on top heh. that and/or recapping will probably stop the need for reboots.

is there any reason to have 25v caps in these things. my zyxel is also 12v and with 25v caps. perhaps because of the heat?

I'm looking at both the FC and FM PDF data sheet and indeed there are 10 X 12.5mm 25v caps, but at only 270/330uF for the FC series and 330uF for the FM series. However I need 470uF 25v caps.

Thanks for the help and info guys. I'm gonna order later this weekend and hopefully I'll have time to recap the router by next weekend. I've got more networking gear as well as a few PSU's to post up later, but those will be in separate threads.

Couldn't afford it, and was not available locally... It only started to do this after 4 years of use...

So if it is toast I got my 4 years out of it I guess...

i was the same concerning cisco availability for the office connection. i wanted a K9-SEC edition cos i was looking forward to VPN possibility etc. in the end it was 40 day wait for that version to come from usa and i just got them a zyxel the next day cos we were connected then and we had been on the waiting list for about 2 years before they finally laid some copper for dsl customers (it was all fibre from the 80s in the city). i was so excited.......since then never looked back and that office zyxel, i forget the version but it rarely needs reboot. unlike my never one with better firewall at home, i got dsl finally a few months later.

if i could buy drinks for the team that developed DSL i would.....

I've seen 25v caps on 3.3v and 1.5v rails in these kinds of routers, eg. D-Link DSL-502T - probably the least expensive caps that have sufficient ripple-current rating. I replaced those with Rubycon YXF 1000/6.3v. You can actually measure the voltage across the old caps and derate the replacement ones accordingly - Panasonic FC 1000/10v/10mm will probably work fine on the output of the VRM instead of 470/25v. The only critical ones are the ones on the VRM output.

I would measure the voltage first, my 3com switch has 25v on the output from the mostfet for some odd reason...

Well.... I managed to not kill my router : . Here are some pixs of the new Panasonic FM caps installed ghetto-style .

Router booted up fine and I'm all set to go. At least I'll have the piece of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about the caps going bad for the rest of the routers useful life.

Again thanks guys for the info and help on my first recap. More stuff to be recapped on the way!

I have a NetGear WGR614 as well, but v1. This hopefully don't use Teapos. I did not have any single problem with it, tough. Not even modified in any way, but I remember I drilled a hell lot of holes to my RP614 NetGear since it was heating up pretty much...
BTW, come to think that the Samxons are reasonably big, they might fit w/o increasing the ESL too much with so long wires, but what the hell - it works, is not it?
