Another Antec (CWT) more crappy caps. Within the past few days my friends system would reboot sporadically without warning, so he asked me to take a look at his sytem I built for him. Mobo looked fine, etc. etc. so I opened up the PSU to find crap caps. This was all at 11pm at night when I was already half-asleep... but he needed to work on a important project so I proceeded to fix his PSU.
I found CapXon's on the 3.3v/5v outputs that didn't seem to be bulging so I left them alone. I saw 2 2200uF 16v Fuhjyyu's that were starting to bulge but hadn't leaked yet. However i did find...

How to NOT recap your motherboard
Linky @ XS
I dont know if this has been shown here.... but anyways scroll down a bit to see the way a "cap mod" was done to that DFI NF2 Infinity motherboard. I've seen plenty of bad solder jobs, but this is just insane.Linky @ XS

How about imagevenue? They seem a bit more reliable.
Any concerns with site bandwidth with large images?

Re: Dell uses quality caps?
Oh yea forgot about the booting problem as first described. For some odd reason someone decided that a sleeve-bearing fan would be better than a ball-bearing fan inside a hot PSU....Needless to say I'm suprised that the thermal protection saved the PSU. The cheapo sleeve bearing fan was replaced with a quality sunon dual ball bearing fan.

Dell uses quality caps?
I got a old Dell Dimension 8100 in from a friend for servicing. The system would power on for a minute max and then turn off. I'd figure I would take a look inside and look for the usual suspects of failure (CPU fan, bad caps, etc.). Upon opening the case I was pleasantly suprised to find that all the caps were quality japanese caps.

This should make overclockers happy. I'm guessing they are probably using United Chemi Con KZG for the rest of the board.DFI Press Release

Motor Run Capacitor in AC unit
The hot summer days from the heat wave around a month ago here in southern california took its toll on my Air Conditioning unit. I tried to turn it on a few days ago as usual..., but the unit would not start up. A quick call to a friend who services AC units got me back up and running again. There was a bad motor run cap that was obviously bulging
Replacement cap was bought locally for around $15, MUCH cheaper than calling some random AC repairman from the yellow pages. Just though I would share this experience with you guys....

Zyxel P-330W Router
I got this router for $15 after rebate from Compusa (still on sale from 8/6 - 8/12) and it isn't too bad from a features standpoint; Linux-based firmware, WPA2 support, and it can even act as a wireless ethernet bridge (reason why I got it). However like 99% of all consumer routers it uses bad caps.

I forgot what the manufacturer of the caps was since I already threw them away, but if you can recognize it from the photos kudos to you.
Replacement caps are 2 X Panasonic FM 25v 470uF,...

Netgear WGT624v2 Router
Another router, more crapy caps. I guess Netgear is infamous for their use of craptastic Teapo caps.
Before

Only 2 caps that really need to redone, 2 X 25v 100uF Teapos.

Bad caps were replaced with 2 X 25v 100uF UCC KY. Of course I also added some heatsinks to the Atheros processor chip and the LAN controller chip.
Overall a quick job that took less than 5 minutes....

General Cap question
When replacing caps should you generally stay within the same type of cap? More specifically if the caps that need to be replaced are general-use types of caps should you replace them with the same type or go for low-esr caps? I am asking because I am going to recap a Linksys WRT54G that has some crappy Hermei caps. You would think that since Linksys is a division of Cisco that they would use good caps inside their products; I guess maybe the general consumer division is a exception.

Netgear DG834g v2
Here is a Netgear DG83G v2 with some bad caps. They weren't bulging, but I decided to recap it anyways.

There are 4 el cheapo Teapos, the rest are United Chemi-Con KY series. I don't know why they decided to use Teapos considering there are United Chemi-Cons in there. Anyways the bad caps are:
2 X Teapo SC 16v 1000uF 10 X 15mm
1 Teapo SC 16v 470uF 8 X 15mm
1 Teapo SC 25v 100uF 6 X 11mm
The el cheapo Teapos were replaced with:

Re: Netgear WGR614 v4 Router
Well.... I managed to not kill my router: . Here are some pixs of the new Panasonic FM caps installed ghetto-style

Router booted up fine and I'm all set to go. At least I'll have the piece of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about the caps going bad for the rest of the routers useful life.
Again thanks guys for the info and...

MSI K7T266 Pro2 v2
I got this board from a friend and needless to say I'm suprised that it even booted at all. I'm not going to bother replacing the caps since he already sold his CPU and is going to upgrade to a Athlon 64. Here is a list of the caps and come pixs.
United Chemi-Con KZG (ok):
3 X 16v 1500uF
8 X 6.3v 2200uF
Tayeh (bad brand, but not bulging yet);
3 X 6.3v 1500uF
Lelon (all busted):
10 X 6.3v 1000uF

Re: Netgear WGR614 v4 Router
I'm looking at both the FC and FM PDF data sheet and indeed there are 10 X 12.5mm 25v caps, but at only 270/330uF for the FC series and 330uF for the FM series. However I need 470uF 25v caps.
Thanks for the help and info guys. I'm gonna order later this weekend and hopefully I'll have time to recap the router by next weekend. I've got more networking gear as well as a few PSU's to post up later, but those will be in separate threads....

Re: Netgear WGR614 v4 Router
Thanks for the heads up PeteS. The KMG would be perfect as it is only 12.5mm tall but wont be suitable as you are telling me. I originally looked at the LXZ/KZE/KY series but I immediately noticed that they were 16mm tall. I guess I'll have to get a little bit creative and mount them at a 90 degree angle.

Re: Netgear WGR614 v4 Router
I lookeded up the specs for the Panasonic FC/FM series but unfortunately their 470uF 25v caps are too tall for the limited space inside the router; vertical space inside the router is ~14mm. However I did find some United Chemi-Con KMG's that are not too tall, would those be ok?Re: Netgear WGR614 v4 Router

Netgear WGR614 v4 Router
Hi guys first post here on badcaps.
Anyways here is a Netgear WGR614 v4 Router with el cheapo Teapo caps (hehe it rhymes).

BTW the heatsinks were installed by me to cool the VRM's and the controller chips.
I have already read most of the forum FAQ's and sticky threads but I still have a newbie question. The specs for the Teapo caps are here (PDF file) and state that they are Low ESR/High frequency caps. While searching...
