She'd park right by my house and jump on my wireless. I figured out it was her and we had some words about it.
Wow, what gall... Hacking wep/stealing wifi is a felony and at the least theft of service. If someone said don't use my network again I would stop, doubly so sitting in front of their house. Its one of those things that gets enforced in extreme cases, ie this.

I would have told her that I'm logging all her traffic and calling the police.

Hacking wep is childs play. Use wpa2. Or like you did, if you don't need wifi, don't use it.

When I first set up my network here I was wireless with WEP turmed off. All was well and good until some realestate sales lady piggy backed on me. She'd park right by my house and jump on my wireless. I figured out it was her and we had some words about it. I turned on the WEP and all was good for a week or so. She hacked her way in on me again! At this point I uninstalled all my wireless cards and turned the wireless side of my modem/router off. I'm hard wired and somewhat safe now.

Get openwrt and you can ban mac addresses and/or redirect her to a page saying stop stealing my wifi.

I thought you were the linux guy?

and LOL what hackers? You think people drive around looking for wep protected networks to crack? The only real "prize" from wifi hacking is internet access when you don't have it.

Just put on wep and lock her out. If she cracks it ask her out. Using encryption won't make you a target. Right now you're SCREAMING all of your browsing at the neighbourhood. Anyone with a wifi card can read the packets with minimal effort... even on windows.

That's how my setup has been for the last 3 years or so. You'll be surprised at how effective it is at keeping common people out. My router keeps track of all of the devices that have been connected to it. So far, I haven't seen anything other than only my family's stuff.

Re: how to get rid of wifi mooches

My old POS HP laptop has a Broadcom wifi card and it was a royal PITA to make it work with Ubuntu. I had to use ndiswrapper and it was about as stable as Charles Manson. It never did very well with signal strength either, both in Window$ and in Ubuntu.

OTOH, the cheap Atheros cards I have do a great job at picking up weak signals (I've had them give me a solid connection where other cards wouldn't even work) and they work great in Ubuntu.

I know there is a huge disparity between specific chipset models but overall, Atheros cards have always worked the best for me. They do DAMN well with a weak signal.

yes. fedora seems cool with them ootb, others all that i have to do is some quick fwcutter-b43 work.

ndiswrapper is a crapchute at times... no .inf, no go. some chips also have poor signal indication with it...

M557-G0 no WiFi/Bt no WIFIVendor file?
    by howardc64
Thanks to Diah, got M557-G0 LCD panel buffer board repaired and running ( link ) Next challenge is no WiFi/Bt despite module on the main board and getting 3.3v supply (3.45v measured)
    • TV Menu shows Network Access Point option (enet unplugged) but menu can't select that entry
    • Service Menu shows many Bt/Wifi info missing
    • Vizio app shows no WIFIVendor file
Prior owner used enet and said turned off wifi somehow. It seems system config info for wifi might be missing. Anyone experienced this before?
    • Tried countless enet unplug (user manual said need to unplug enet to get to wifi menu), factory
