Soyo DYLM24D6 - turned off and on, now does not turn on

I'm a poor college student, but I do have one worldly possession to adore: a very nice 24" monitor I picked up around three years ago with a truly gorgeous display.

Well, it decided to start turning on and off when awoken from sleep, but after half a minute of that nonsense it would work fine thereafter until it was next turned on. I assumed it was some sort of driver nonsense or a GPU issue... well, it wasn't. Tonight it would cycle off in only half a second and it didn't fix itself; testing it with a laptop showed the same issue. Now it won't turn on at all, and I'm not keen on $400 to replace it (cheaper monitors all seem to have low-quality TN panels).

Unfortunately, my electronics knowledge is.. very limited. I'm been reading what I can on this site and its forums, but it seems most of the posters here have a more significant background in the field than I do. It's hard to know where to start.

As the attached images show, the innards are confusing. The capacitors *look* fine on the one board I can clearly see, but I suspect I will find a different story on the ones under the metal shroud. I think I can unscrew the PCBs out from under it without damaging the "ribbon", but I'm not sure.

Am I on the right track? I'm a bit worried about getting shocked since I've never messed with something like this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you are on the right track. The symptoms you describe are consistent with bad capacitors. Work carefully, that ribbon cable is somewhat fragile, and damaging it would be disastrous. It should unplug at the upper end. and at the lower end if you remove the tape (carefully!).

Referring to the second picture; the card on the left is the 'logic card', 'video card', or 'A/D card'. The one to the right, still under the cover, is the power supply, while the one at the extreme right is the inverter.

I expect once you remove it from the cover you will find a number of very cheap caps with bulging caps. Do NOT run down to Radio Shack to buy replacements. You would be buying overpriced junk to replace garbage - not an improvement.

I have the same monitor and after some use, which could be minutes to hours, the screen goes black with a weird fading pattern. Sometimes turning it off/on a few times makes it work a bit longer, but it happens again.

I've just opened the unit up and inspected the caps on:
      - ps board, main board and invertor board and didn't notice any peculiarities.

      did OP fix his issue?
      Any ideas?

      Regards

When you screen goes black, does power led stay on (green I assume)?

If yes, do know if the main chip on the logic board is very hot?

        Post pictures using these procedures

          Thanks for the reply.
Given that I currently have the monitor fully disassembled, I can't say for sure, but I think after the funny pattern, I don't think the light remains blue (I think it is blue raher than green when all is active),

The funny pattern starts from the sides, turns into a cone, then it goes blank

Sometimes power cycling a few times makes it come back for a few more minutes, but then it happns again.

I'll post some pictures once I put the monitor back together.

          regards

We want pictures of your boards when the monitor is disassembled!! We want pics that look like this post (mine).
