How to suggestions for LCD bulb replacement.

Hi, I have an LCD computer monitor. It comes on for about 1sec and then goes off. I determined that one of the six bulbs in the monitor were bad. Now i need to replace the bulb. I have removed the bulb housings and i show one of them in the enclosed pic.

I dont know if this is the right forum but so many on here have been so helpful i thought i would try this problem on here as well.

    My questions are as follows:
How to remove bulb from metal case?
How to remove “white” rubber piece at end of each bulb?
General ideas/help on how to remove a single bulb and
    replace with a new one.
Good place to order a new bulb?
What to measure to determine replacement bulb?

    Thanks.

Re: How to suggestions for LCD bulb replacement.

You can coax the bulb pack out of the metal housing fairly simply. Usually the wires are kind of glued down on the back side, you will be able to slide a knife or some other tool under them to separate them from the metal. You should also find that you can push the smaller return wires that go to the far end of the bulb through the rubber housing to give enough slack that you can now separate the metal casing from the bulb packs held by the rubber pieces at either end.

I don't think many people would suggest replacing a single bulb but who knows. There are sources for bulbs but any that I have found are all very expensive. The best bet in my opinion is to get yourself a spare from another similar sized monitor. Ebay, Craigslist etc can be good sources to get the same monitor but a cracked LCD.

I have a picture of a similar three bulb pack that I took apart because it had a dead bulb. Although a single replacement is possible, it certainly isn't easy and I don't know what others would recommend but I don't think it's a good value fix.

the tubes will all age together - so change the lot.
digikey sell's them - atleast they were in the last catalog i had.

One more thing i was curious about. When measuring the bulbs to determine replacement ..........where do i measure from? Do you know. I will search online a little more but if you know off the top of your head let me know.

        thanks.

          Freelander,

How did you get the "rubber thing" off the bulbs? I keep thinking i am going to break the bulbs.

rubber covering the solder joint is pushed on - if it's stick then they may have added glue.

the tube is measured end-2-end of the glass body in cm.
            and the diameter in mm.

Lots of gentle persuasion. The wires and solder joint came in on a right angle in mine so there was a lot of coaxing to work it off. In this case, I tried on the dead bulbs that you saw but I had another CCFL bank with a bad solder joint on one of the bulbs. I used the same procedure, re-soldered the joint and voila...it's still running fine!

How did you know you had a "bad" solder joint on the bulb? Perhaps, before taking it ALL apart i should just resolder the joint as well.

i'v seen that, but your lucky.
usually when the solder is bad it causes a lot of heat.
the heat cooks the solder so it wont melt.
i usually have to file the damned stuff off to put fresh solder on!

So i finally got some time to work on this bulb.

I got the single bulb out with not much effort. Thanks.

But now i have another issue regarding this bulb.

                    I measured this bulb:
                    ~ 460mm in length
~2.27mm in diameter (as measured with micrometer)

But when i go to digikey i cant find such a bulb. Any suggestions? Am i going to have to buy a bulb that is not the same exact size? THoughts?

Digikey is not the only source for CCFLs. Sources can be found using both Google and eBay.

The standard size will be 2.6mm x 460mm. try www.ccfldirect.com. but each lamps will cost about 10.00 each.

What size LCD monitor do you have? 22" widescreen ?

PlainBill is right ebay or google may be a better choice for finding these lamps

I checked ebay......no 460-465mm bulbs found. I will check a few other sources.

Since the diameter of mine is 2.27mm ...will a 2.6mm bulb work?

The monitor is an HP F2105....i think its 21".

Its a 21" wide screen.. 2.27 isn't a standard size and all site I have visit don't have that diameter. They do have 2.2mm and 2.4mm but not in the length you need. So .. unless you have an gauge meter I'm sure your lamps are 2.6.mm in diameter.

                              maybe this website will help

FYI: Decided to go with "ccflwarehouse" they had the cheapest overall price. I am sure this fluctuates between vendors but the guy was really nice on the phone when i talked and they were cheapest by 5 to 6 dollars. So now i will just wait for the part and then put the new one in once it gets here.

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

                                      Hi,

I have a LUMIMAN Smart Bulb that suddenly stopped lighting one day. The bulb is still detected in the app, but won't light. I've probed around and nothing seems to look off with any of the diodes, caps or resistors. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi module seems to be working as it's still detected in the app. I even tried deleting and re-pairing the bulb (it didn't light, but I was still able to follow the pairing instructions), it re-paired fine, but still no light.

In diode mode, the LEDs all light up when probed so I'm guessing this means the LEDs themselves are OK. I was expecting...

Supposedly there is a timer module that needs to be re-calibrated or reset. I don't know where the module is located. I see some vendors selling the bulb with the housing stating module included which leads me to think the module is located inside the enclosure the bulb mounts in, but I didn't see it. Maybe it's inside the plug attached to the bulb?

Unknown transformer : how to find a good replacement part ?

                                      Hello guys,

I would like a quite old but still good 800 W ATX PSU to be repaired. The problem was an extremely heavy coil whine coming from the small secondary transfomer on the PCB.

I desoldered it hoping the references on the upper side would allow me to find a adequate replacement part. Sadly the written references drove me nowhere but to the manufacturer (I-MAG). I sent them a message like a bottle in the see asking them to send me a datasheet of the transformer. And... They responded ! I received a kind of datasheet (see attachment) but my competencies do not allow...

                                      Hi,
I just replaced the battery on a Google Pixel 5.
After that the proximity sensor isn't functioning properly any more. It is constantly activated. So when playing a voice message on Whatsapp, the Screen instantly turns off.
Checking with a sensor app I can verify weird behavior of the sensor. It is triggered when nothing is near and sometimes works correctly when squeezing the phone next to the sensor hole.
The rubber seal is on again (as mentioned in various suggestions in other forums).

This smells like a cold or broken solder joint. So I'd like to reflow...
