Big cap bad. I didn't replace the 22uf, though. Probably should have.

      Replace ALL the caps.

As nice as ever.... I like the part of the magic, Toasty. That was funny. And by the way, if you discard all of your test equipment, I can send you my mailing address so you can dispose of it in my P.O. Box.....

Doc, better replace all of them in one shot. Listen to the seniors around here......

That was not a complaint. You really get to the point, in a funny way.

Re: viewsonic VA912b will not turn on.

people ( whom have posted here on this very thread) have said its ok to ignore the big one and just do all of the smaller ones, is this information just from a few months ago faulty info?

this here is the post i refer to https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6740

I really am confused, if that info in that post is no longer valid and I need to replace the big one as well then Ill buy one and throw it in, but as far as I knew it wasn't necessary.

It's not NECESSARY, but you're already there.

If it should fail 6 months from now, will you have the time to fix it?

My point is (again & again), your(my) time has value. For $5 more now, you've replaced all the caps and you won't need to go back and fix that one in the future.

As far as I am concerned, it isn't necessary. We know why the filter caps for the 5V and 12V supplies fail. They are filtering the output of a switching supply operating at 100Khz or above. Their ability to absorb those rapid pulses depends on a low (effective) series resistance. If that increases they start dissipating more heat, leading to increased heat, excess pressure, and a bulging top. At that point it becomes obvious there is a failure.

Contrast the situation with the main filter cap. It's handling a rectified sine wave at 120 Hz. They've been building caps to handle that for over 50 years.

Now, it also depends on the application. If you are rebuilding the $150 power supply for a pimped up gaming computer and and you are afraid all your geek friends will laugh if you don't replace the cap with a something kEwL, by all means do so. However, for a 5 year old monitor that is now worth about $50 on Craigslist - nah!

With that reasoning, why even crack the case at all....? Why spend $10-$15 on parts and your time??

If you're going to fix, then FIX it right and completely.

If not, kick it to the curb and buy a new one. Then you have 2-5 years to contemplate recapping it...

By that logic, while you're replacing the caps in the power supply, shouldn't you also replace the CCFLs? They fail too. And let's not forget the switches on the control panel. They're only good for 100,000 operations or so.

I usually specify first class mail and it takes two to three days. My last order was placed on Wednesday, the 16th and shipped less than half an hour later. I received it late on the 18th.

Why wait? 1st class anywhere in the contiguous states is 4 days MAX.

                                  At least email them.

went ahead and gave them a call, they said it definitely should have been here by now but company policy says they must wait 12 days, so if they do not come by Friday they will reship the order.
