    Inspiron laptop boots to white screen with tested replacement screen assembly

    I just sold a tested screen assembly from a Dell Inspiron 5150 on ebay. This is the whole assembly not just the panel so all the buyer has to do is bolt it on and connect the LVDS cable, wifi, etc. This thing was in immaculate condition. I packed it very securely as with other screens and panels. I didn't make much on the sale since there were others that were very low priced and I paid shipping too so to compete with other sellers.

    Buyer receives it and "gently installs it" to a Inspiron 1100 (Service Tag# 9CTBT21) and claims to have a solid white display on boot and then a blotchy white screen apparently when it reaches the desktop (pics supplied by buyer through ebay message). Buyer claims that the purchase was made to remedy a cracked screen. They claim this is the second time they have replaced the screen since owning it from new and are just trying to keep it going before buying a new machine. Buyer claims they had an external display connected and working prior to installing my item so not graphics chip.

    I have not seen this issue before but according to searching the net a poorly seated LVDS cable at the motherboard or a damaged socket causing poor seating can cause this. Is there a mismatch between Inspiron 1100 and 5150 that I missed even though they are same series? If an external display works then it is within the screen assembly, as in LVDS cable, inverter, panel etc? Is my panel damaged prior to arrival based on pictures or is it installer error?

    Just wanted a rather solid opinion before I answer to refund or not. I accept no returns on tested items because I can't control the install or the installer as compared to if I did the work on my ESD safe bench and the correct tools.

    14" or 15" ? There are two resolutions to the 15".
    You say immaculate condition, did you test it before you sent it ?

      That can happen if the pin wiring is incorrect, wrong resolution etc.

      My gut says screen is not compatible with lappy or in the least the lvds cable is wired wrong.

      How do I know this? I bought a lcd tester standalone. I have seen the same scenario with wrong res and lvds cable. Switch to right lvds or right rez...all fixed.

      You cans earch my name for the reviews on the tester a bit back.

      On a sidenote, I kick myself in the ass. I tossed $400 worth of screens doing same thing. I think my test lappy not comptaible and didnt have tester at the time;

        @diff - Yes I did test it before ship as with all my items. I did state that in my post both in the title and the message. It's a 15" clearly stated in the listing but after so many people don't read the listings I'm sure the buyer missed it. Unknown what the buyer's size is and with their service tag# I am unable to see the components list to determine if it is a 14". Buyer has a low feedback score and I am always wary of that.

        @ozzy214 - I am sure the buyer didn't read the listing and determine if the screen was compatible with their machine. The LVDS cable makes sense as well as the possible screen size difference per resolution.

        I only sell on ebay to pay for medical insurance and this sale just ate up all potential profit for resale since though I have a "no return policy" the buyer would have some "wiggle room" with ebay to get a refund. Most buyers never read the whole listing especially when they shop on mobile devices. I have two negative feedbacks from two buyers that had a language barrier with me to start and then had no idea what they were buying and how to use it. When I replied to their messages about an issue with the item they never responded and left negative feedback instead. That hurt!

        I will retest this item upon receipt and relist it in hopes that another sale will offset my losses.

        Thanks for the quick responses and insightful messages
