2 Secs 2 Black- Dont belive what you see

Hi Im new here and I wish I found this forum earlier as it has some supper info and guides, thanks for those that took the time to write them.

My 2secs to black problem (2S2B) is/was on an LG Flaton W1946.

My visual and nasal board inspection found no tale tale signs of heat damage to circuitry or capacitor leakage/bulges.

With the set striped down I powered up with all the components laid out on the floor (granite tiles) and still got 2S2B even with LCD ribbon disconnected.

At this time the cfls were still in the frame I had not removed them.

The cfls looked in order with no signs of potential issues looking good so attention went to the cfl wiring but found no evidence.

So back to the PCB main board using a usb microscope inspected for dry joints, foil lift offs ect.

    Nothing suspect.

Inverter coil was showing a 0.845 Kohm reading I asked in the forum on a thread if this was OK.

I decided to remove the cfls all together from the frame but this time when powering on with components laid out on the floor when I started lightly prodding taping the ends I heard a faint arching noise on the rear end of the top tube and the cfls stayed on this time.

looking at the end rubber grommet it was not discoloured or showing any sign of internal issues so I removed it gently ( power off :-) ) and found the wire barely connected and the insulation had melted slightly but this was not evident with the small white rubber grommet in place.

Now that has been solder back on and checked before assembly I let it run powered up for about 30mins for any issues before reassembly.

What I want to say to the forum is don't believe what you see on the surface because If I never removed the cfls completely I would have never found the issue so quick and may have even started to replace CAPS.

In the future I will always remove the cfls for total close inspection before ruling them out and as I never had a test cfl I might have saved some time.

So my understanding is there is a sniffer circuitry that detects issues with the cfls before they can overheat and cause a fire.

    Am I correct on this?

Yes. Inverters have extensive protection circuitry to reduce chances of electric arcs that could potentially melt something or cause a fire.

    A working TV? How boring!

That is why if you are going to work on lots of monitor, you should have test lamps so you do not waste time troubleshooting the board.

What you find on the lamp assembly is one of the common failure.

I fixed a few little TV's and monitors that had that exact same problem.
