HP/Sony CRT Monitor - markings on the screen

I recently got an HP A7217A (rebadged sony FW900) monitor that works pretty well, but there's some kind of issue that appears to be with the anti-glare coating (maybe) being damaged. The picture illustrates this better than I could describe it, so those would be worth a look.

Any ideas as to the cause of the problem and any possible ways to fix it? I've tried all kinds of standard cleaning strategies.

kids using it for a chalkboard?
looks like you will need to strip the antiglare to fix.

No, I got it like that. Any ideas as to how to get that antiglare coating off?

Thats part of the crt glass, you would need a glass polishing compound like cerium oxide, but then the screen would end up being shinny.

A little progress has been made since last time. I've had very minimal results with glass cleaner, Formula 409, and SimpleGreen. The most success I've had so far is Magic Eraser drenched in Formula 409, but that's still pretty slow going too.

Something that I would try, (because I am nuts anyway) is to take the crt completely out and use carb cleaner on the face. Do not get any carb cleaner on plastics or the Dag coating.

                Fixed!

After a few days of intense scrubbing with Formula 409 and Magic Eraser, I finally got the rest of that coating off.

It took a lot of effort, but it was definitely worth it. Now the monitor looks good whether it is on or off.
