Re: SyncMaster 2493HM with no picture and solid blue LED

The monitor is working again. I removed some more glue from the board, and after a few attempts at turning it on, it finally did. I'm hoping I actually solved the problem this time and that this isn't just a coincidence.

Thanks again everyone for all your help. Hopefully it'll just keep working this time.

I used denatured alcohol to soften the glue for easier removal of the glue.

Re: SyncMaster 2493HM with no picture and solid blue LED

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm having exactly the same problem with this monitor. Did this ever get resolved? If so, what ended up being the problem? I have a capacitor replacement kit here, but won't bother with it if that wasn't the issue.

The specific problem is as follows: The monitor was working great for a while, then every once in a while it would not wake up. When it does this, there's a solid blue LED but nothing on screen. Usually, after playing with the power connection / switch for about ~20 or so minutes, the screen would come on and work all day. It wouldn't act up again for a few days to a couple weeks, but then it would happen again. The spacing on these events seemed to be random.

Fast forward to this week. It has occurred daily for the last 3 days. Today, it finally reached the point where I couldn't get it to work at all. I was prodding at it for a good 20 or so minutes (as usual), then the screen came on...for about 30 seconds. Then, it went black again and I couldn't revive it.

I'm a little stuck because this is my work monitor, so I can't really bring it home to work on it, and my available time to work on it here is limited. I haven't popped it open yet, although I was thinking about doing that this afternoon. I hate borrowing tools here, so I'll probably have to go get my own stuff during lunch or something.

Any suggestions on what to look for? I know to look for burned traces / bulging capacitors, but any other information would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Removing the glue first so you can if it has any damaged or burnt parts due o bad glue, that will be the starting point.

Thanks for the tip on the glue, that will be the first thing I look at. Rubbing alcohol softens this stuff?

Re: SyncMaster 2493HM with no picture and solid blue LED

Well, an update if anyone is interested. I cracked it open and found a number of blobs of hard glue on the power board around some of the components, most of which looked charred. I put some rubbing alcohol on the blobs and went to work with an Exacto knife and got almost all of it off. Then gave it some shots with a can of computer duster to blast the last little bits away. I didn't see any burnt marks or roasted traces or anything like that under the (formerly) glued areas. All of the capacitors looked good as well. Not seeing anything else that caught my eye, I gave the board a final wipe down, and buttoned it all back up.

It's been working perfectly the last two days. On Friday when I took it home (before getting the glue out), I couldn't get it to turn on at all. I've got my fingers crossed that that's all it was. Thanks for the help!
