    Howto: Make a CCFL tester

    Just a quick howto here.

Step 1. Find very cheap (or free) monitor with cracked panel. It could of course be any other failure with a working backlight, but monitors with bad panels are first to be tossed away usually.

Step 2. Find pin labeled BL on the connector going from the power supply to the logic board. If it isn't labeled, probe around for a pin that gives close to zero volts when the monitor is OFF, and close to 3.3v when it is ON.

Step 3. Wire the BL pin to the 3.3v rail of the power supply. You now have a PS that will run the inverter without a logic board connected. Confirm this by disconnecting the logic board.

Step 4. Remove PS from monitor with cracked panel. You now have a standalone CCFL tester. That's all.

This should be added to the FAQ - I just happen to have a FS 17" tft with smashed screen Need to probe around to find BL and 3.3V, then find a suitable housing for that board.

The panel for mounting the boards came from inside the LCD panel. I save them for making a lot of projects.

As a bonus i'll make a tutorial on how to dim the CCFLs as well so you can test for failing lamps (aged lamps flicker when the backlight is dimmed low). I use a couple CCFLs scavenged from a 15" with cracked screen to light my workbench, so i make full use of the dimming feature.

I used the Inverter board that has DC control for dimming function, I use the pot to vary the input voltage to the DIM line 0V = OFF, 5V = MAX brightness. I am planing to make portable CCFL lantern with dimming funtion running off 12V batteries, but I may end up using LED instead.

I'll test that PS later today and see if it works - and if it does, I'll box it up. Is the hot wire marked somehow on CCFL's?

The hot wire is the thicker wire.

Actually, there is no hot side or cold side of the CCFL since it is just a lamp without any polarity, they have to use smaller wire in one end because the wire has to fit inside the LCD assmbly and run all the way back to the connector which on the other side of the panel, when you buy raw lamp and solder the wire back on youself you do not have to woory about which end of the lamp go to which wire, same thing when you change the SHOP LAMP, you van put tyhe lamp in either way.

I use a cold cathode light for making your computer pretty with pins that will connect to the light you are testing and hit the switch to turn it on from a power supply not connect to a computer. ghetto but it's functional

HANNSG Hi221 -- 2 secs to black feat. CCFL flicker & "burn" marks on power board
                    by ttmi100x
                    Greetings everyone,

I have a HANNSG Hi221 monitor that exhibits two seconds to black issues (backlight goes off, display is still on as confirmed by shining a flashlight on it) with some additional oddities...

The monitor failed on me with a standard "2 seconds to black" some time ago prompting me to initially replace most of the electrolytic capacitors (some of them were bulging/leaking).
Things kinda sorta worked for a night, then the problem returned along with some flickering and "buzzing" noises.

                    Upon closer inspection...

Upgrading a Samsung ue55nu7096u with logic board from an ue55ru7105k -- good idea?
                    by ohren
I hope this is the right forum to post in despite not technically being a repair, but still a question of swapping boards.

I thought I'd explore the possibility to upgrade an existing working Samsung ue55nu7096u with the logic board (and power board if needed) of a newer model (ue55ru7105k) of the same size and appearance (and resolution). The reason being I'd like the extra inputs of that board including component in, an extra HDMI port and bluetooth. Its panel is broken so I have no use for the board otherwise.

The models launched in 2018 and 2019 respectively....

Help on Samsung Syncmaster T220 dead ccfl lamp
                    by mikey5791
                    Hi,

This monitor previously is my main working monitor which i have been using for 8~9 years. Yesterday, when i switched on my pc from fresh to power on, the monitor is just black no display. I started dismantle to look inside the monitor power board but nothing looks suspicious or burnt. So i took my external ccfl inverter to try to power the monitor ccfl lamps which consisted of 2 lamps on upper part and 2 lamps on the lower part.

Found out the upper ccfl lamp which is supposed to connect to cn304 on the power board did not light up. Then i installed a used working...

Will I have a bricked logic board after reflow of the GPU v-core U8900 chip on my Mid-2012 15" Retina Macbook pro?
                    by korben_dallas
Hi everyone! I'm trying to fix my black screen / failed U8900 GPU v-core on my Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 15" Retinaby doing a rework/reflow of the chip (once I determine that's the real issue; but it likely is).

I've been disabling the GPU in NVRAM for a few years... but it's just time for a better solution.

I'm new to soldering but the only feasible way to fix this issue is to do something myself.

                    MY QUESTION:
I've been seeing some people (on this forum mostly) run into issues with the logic board needing a serial number or it being deactivated (?)...

                    by Yanleb
Hi all, I just want to share the repair of my 60PK550-UA TV set.

The TV set was powering on, just no image. After verification, nothing wrong on the YSus or ZSus boards. Nothing wrong on the main board either.

But I noticed that the LED was not flashing on the Logic Control Board. This is an EBR63450301. The LED is supposed to flash even with all the flat cables disconnected, with only the power cable attached.

All the voltages measured at the electrolytic capacitors on the board were good. From top left to bottom right:
                    C57: 3.30V
                    C61:...
