Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
So I was able to replace the suspect cap, and started re-assembly....now I have a different problem.....
As I started to re-assemble, in between mounting boards and re-installing screws, I would pause, plug the unit in, press the power button and make sure things were still working... which they did for a bit, I would press the power button, I would hear the relay click and the receiver would turn on...
I got to a point where I had to step away from it for a few minutes, and I left the unit powered on....then I heard a strange sound, turned around and I saw a small puff of smoke, but couldnt tell where on the board it came from.....
Now the unit, when plugged in, seems to turn on and looks like it's on by the screen, but for a sneaking reason, I feel like the actual amplifier portion is not turning on and something went awry.......
Can we start to troubleshoot that now?? Any help is appreciated and I can give any readings necessary to keep the process moving........

Ahh, good eye, I took another look at the cap, and I think you're right! makes better sense to me now, It does look like it could have leaked electrolyte......
Thanks for your patience with my ignorance......Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
your post #48, second picture. Look at the black rubber where the legs stick out. It looks wet to me as if it had leaked electrolyte.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
Think of that cap as a battery, a dead battery that draws current but won't hold a charge. The 5v line is trying to charge it through the 100Ω resistor and the cap is drawing so much current it is killing the 5 volt supply. It likely leaked and dried up years ago.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
your picture appears to show a slight "oil like sheen" on the far side of the left pin... I think that is what is in question. Maybe flux from desoldering??? or leakage from the cap.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
Physically the cap looks fine, doesnt look bulging or otherwise broken anywhere, although I know that just because it looks fine physically that doesnt mean that it's a good component....It does test low....but the reference to a wet bottom I dont know what he means by that, it wasnt actually wet, maybe it did look that way in the picture?Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
What do you actually mean when you say the cap is "wet" on the bottom, Im not familiar with that term.....
Thanks for the help!Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
That super cap is not really needed for function. It’s probably just to keep settings, time etc. With the super cap c617 removed, the 100 ohm resistor put back in place, the unit should work now fine. Looks like the old cap is “wet” on the bottom?Last edited by CapLeaker; 01-04-2022, 04:10 PM.Leave a comment:

This component is a bit rare these days, most equipment uses other ways to backup settings etc.Leave a comment:

ok, so I then think that the one I purchased is ok...... Now to wait for parts to arrive, man, I wish there were local places to get stuff like this......Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
Yes it is a polarized capacitor it acts like a backup battery in the circuit.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
Check page 2, and page 7, I think it is polarized, at least from what I can find......Hopefully I picked an ok one, cause I couldnt find any close equivalent on the electrolytic side of selection on DigiKey.......Attached FilesLeave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
That cap is likely bad, it is a super cap 47mf/5.5v, mille not micro farad used for backup. It is possible the cap has been discharged for so long it won't charge any more and loads the 5v line too much so the micro won't turn on.
You don't need to have a higher voltage cap in that position 5.5v is what it should be.Last edited by R_J; 01-04-2022, 12:49 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
hmmm... might not work. I don't see that it is an electrolytic (ie. polarized) which I believe the c617 is. You need to check that.Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
good work... size isn't necessarily an issue except maybe fitting to the board / mount. You might have to do some mod (ie. jumpering, glue, etc). look for something with the same capacitance and move up in voltage... it will likely be smaller physically (also due to advances in technology).Leave a comment:

Re: Pioneer VSX-3300 Receiver Wont Power On
I have one of the cheap multi-function testers and you can see what shows on the screen, looks like it's testing at 34mF, seems low to me, but not sure with this size of cap.....when I look for replacments, I dont see any of similar size, all I can find are supercaps? Is that what this one acutally is, they seem to have different physical sizes than the one I have here.......Leave a comment:

It’s gotta be that c617 cap. It goes to gnd. Change it and see what happens.Leave a comment:

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?by Tynan DillI was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.
Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.
I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.
The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.
With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

by PantherDaveHi all!
I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅
I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

by sam_sam_samI was working on this CNC machine today found no keyboard functioning no control relay powering on
The screen powered on and was giving an operation error but the manual was not very clear about what the error exactly was but with a little bit of troubleshooting and finding out that the control relays not powering on and no keyboard functions we narrowed down to this one switching power supply which of course does not have any indicator LED light they are on the keyboard interface/relay controller board

by Journey11Hi All,
First time posting here ... my name is Kevin but my friends call me Journey.
I have a Samsung 75" LCD model UN75RU8000FXZA that I don't remember the original fault other than it wouldn't power up anymore.
After it sat for many month's I decide to look at it again. The motherboard seemed to have power regulation issues. After much fussing I decided to just get a new MB.
It came a few days ago and I installed it now just cycles the power relay on and off ... when on the backlights light up and then dim and then relay kicks off and the whole things starts again.... - Loading...
