Car tape deck sounds awful... Guess what? BAD CAPS!

Surprisingly there appears to be two problems with my car tape deck.

    1. The belts are kind of tired, but it works fine when warmed up. Alas what do you expect when the tape deck is 22 years old.

    2. BAD CAPACITORS! No switch mode PSU in the radio I don't think, but the caps went dry and no wonder why it sounded horrible.

Alas this was a stock deck, nothing to write home about, or nothing to write about in general. Swapped out 4 of the caps in it that had over 3 ohms ESR (47uF and larger), and at least the non-belt problems "sounded" like it went away.

The caps looked like they were 1970s caps. No clear date code on them and no idea why a 1990s car has 1970s caps. Probably Chrysler got a great deal on them, or perhaps I need to look for a better possible date code.

It's a Chrysler stock radio, not sure who actually OEMed it but it does have custom parts in it (booo). The attached picture is the caps I pulled from it (well, not the radial cap, the axial ones are the ones I pulled.) Three of them are 47uF, and one is 100uF, all 10V. I didn't have any axial caps so I just plopped in some radial caps in their place.

Philips electrolytic caps were horrible even back to the 1970's. Those are the blue axial ones in the pic. I change them on sight.

Being a Chrysler OE unit it was most likely made by either Mitsubishi or Huntsville Electronics (Chrysler's captive electronics division until they sold it in pieces from 1996-1998). The Philips parts would make me lean toward Huntsville, I doubt Mitsubishi would be using Philips components.

After listening it for a bit, though it's significantly better than before, looks like I missed a cap or two. Before it sounded really screwey, now it's just bass that seems a bit weak and treble a bit too strong. I should have replaced the 1uF caps that were DC blocking caps on the audio signal that I thought were OK...they were also those Philips electrolytics. Oh well, I'll get to them someday.

Actually... listening it to it again, it sounds fine when playing a regular tape. However when using a line-in to tape adapter, sometimes it sounds very tinny. Ugh. Hate proprietary car radios, hard to debug in circuit. Need to get a bunch of wiring harness so I can test on bench instead of in situ.

IBM LTO 7 Tape Drive - Dust Sensors??
                  by RetroComputingGrotto
I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...

                  Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

LG 75UN8570AUD panel issue fixed with tape.
                  by triplefour
I've been seeing a lot of the new TVs (samsung and LG only i think) maybe 1-2 years old suffering from sudden panel death and have been over 50% successful bringing them at least most of the way back to functionality if not all the way, with the tape masking of the LVDS pins method.
add this one to the list. the issue was on the left side of the panel and i ended up blocking just 3 pins on the connector that joins the two panel boards that make up the left side of the panel (it has 4 boards total) i didnt get the picture back to 100% perfect. i spent hours fiddling with which pins to block...

Help me understand this schematic Harman&Kardon tape deck (TD470)
                  by edugimeno
                  Hi there!
Im trying to service an old Harman&Kardon tape deck (TD470) player, which after being put away for many years, is now lacking sound randomly (first time I tried it worked, called the owner and said it wasn't working for him, tried again myself and sound was gone)

This intermitent issue led to to go straight to the PS & Caps...I found at least one voltage missing (sorry now I can't remember which one), and one of the 3 fuses in the PS was open (this is strange as an intermitent failure wouldn't relate to a blown fuse).

                  First thing I suspected...

Harman Kardon TD202 Tape Deck SLOW boot-up
                  by Dannyx
Good day folks. Today I got something which I haven't worked on very often because they're falling out of fashion: a tape deck - sounds lame, but it's a challenge I'm willing to accept.

It's a rather basic one: no auto-reverse, though it's got Dolby on it, so I guess it's decent and worth saving.

There are 2 issues with it:
                  A) it takes its sweet time to finally output any sound after being powered on, despite the transport running and the LEDs coming on fine

                  B) the left channel is dead

                  A) I had a look at the schematic on page 49,...
